iTouch

I am going to buy my son an 8G iTouch for Christmas, but I have a question and I've not found the answer online anywhere. Hopefully someone here can help.

The WiFi that they say the iTouch can function on...is that via whatever hot spot your around and/or via the AT&T network of towers?

i have an 8gig one and i wish i can tether it to my blackberry, i haven't found a way yet. a friend of mine has an ipod touch also and he was able to make his Palm Pre (sprint) act as a wifi hotspot so he can get on wifi with his ipod touch. Pretty cool if you don't mind lugging 2 devices around. definitely worth it if you have to go shopping with the wife.

I have a friend who does this with his Palm Pre too. It worked pretty well when we were at CES last year and we didn't want to pay the exorbitant Hilton charges for in-room internet. I wish my HTC Hero could do the same thing, so far I have been unable to find an app that will do that.

This is a bit off topic, but if you have an iPhone, there is an app called MyWi which turns your iphone into a wifi hotspot. I'm not a tech guy so I don't know what this means but it's supposed to be better than tethering because it "Broadcasts the Network Name (SSID) so there is no need to fuss with creating an adhoc network on your laptop." It's a $9.99 app and it needs a jailbroken iphone.

I'm jailbreaking my iphone this weekend just for this app. Many cool features will follow~

You don't need to pay...

PDANet does the same thing & it's free. That's what I've been using.

I agree - there are many free apps out there that do this for several phones.
