Virtual machine, Direct X

I am running Win ME, I do not play any computer games. How important is having the newest version of DirectX? Also how important is the newest version of Virtual machine. The reason I ask is because my system is finally running smooth and I don't want to toss a wrench into it by updating these.

Leave it alone! Unless you have something which requires them, let your system be. ME's messed up enough without other crap being thrown in.
