I read in a certain forum that a lot of people have been having to RMA their 45GB IBM 75GXP hard drive. Has anyone here had the same problem??

I own 2 15GB 75GXP's that I haven't installed yet and that certain thread is making me worried.

I personally know at least TEN people with 75GXPs. I've actually had a 15GB as my primary drive for almost a year now. I don't know of any of these people having problems, and I know at least 2 of them have the 45GB. If you go to a tech support forum, by definiton, you're gonna find people with problems. I'd say that's probably a very disproportionate sample. 75GXPs are great drives.

Well I bought two 20GB 75GXPs at the same time and one for me and the other for my cousin. My drive crapped out, i.e. made a metal on metal grinding noise, so I knew my drive died. RMA with Mwave.com told me to call IBM. RMA with IBM sent me a new drive directly from Hungary. I've had a few minor problems recently with bad clusters but nothing major, for now. *knock on wood*

The 70series is known to have some problems but IBM backs everything they produce so you shouldn't have a problem if something comes up. Just give IBM tech services a ring http://www.ibm.com/planetwide/ a list of their Tech Support numbers around the world. http://www.storage.ibm.com/techsup/hddtech/hddtech.htm If you are scared of real life conversations here is where you can look for help with your IBM hard drive.

Overall IBM's are still probably one of the top performers of ide drives. I have a 75gxp and never had any problems with it, its just a solid drive. There are always going to be a few lemons in every batch of hard drives made by any manufacturer. But IBM is still one of the highest in reliabilities. I'm sure you'll have no worries with those 15 giggers.
