Hi, I am trying to transfer some files from my computer at work onto my laptop. I wanted to just use icq or aim, but there are some firewall issues. Anyone know of any good ways to transfer files between computers? Thanks!

There used to be a company called idrive that would give you free space (I think like 20megs but I cant remember) for storing mp3s and stuff. They went out of business but I am sure you could find something similar if you do a quick search on the net. Also if you have a website, you could just uploade the files wherever your site is stored and then download them later. It really depends on what size you are talking about though.

Fast PC Linker
Would PCLinker work for you? Requires an inexpensive special serial cable connection between the two computers. I use it to transfer data between my notebook and home computer. Can be found at http://members.aol.com/racity/link.html

I assume you mean computers that aren't near each other? Check this out:

two NIC's and a hub - provided your laptop has same network settings as your work pc.

hoey222, what settings do i have to change to set up two nics and a hub? directions or any help would be great! thanks.
btw, the computers are near each other and i need to transfer over 2 gigs of stuff... |

You don't need a hub then. All you have to do is put a NIC in each comp and connect them with a cross-over cable. It must be a cross-over cable to work though. If you want to use the hub for some reason then just connect each computer to the hub using a regular cable. Both thinks have the same effect. Then just enable file sharing on the computers (Start menu > Settings > Control panel > Network > File and Print sharing) and restart. If you are lucky both computers will see eachother when you look in the network neighborhoods.

if you are using windows 98, on both pcs use NETBEUI
make sure each computer has a different name and make sure that they are in the same work group you can also use tcp/ip in network properties (control panel network) - look for tcp/ip for the network adapter. assign an ip address to one 192.168.1.1 subnet 255.255.255.0 the other 192.168.1.2 subnet 255.255.255.0 make sure they are in the same workgroup each computer must have file and print sharing enabled in windows explorer, share the folders you need the data from, then after a million reboots, go into network neighborhood the 2 computers should be there click on one - the folders you shared should show up copy and paste hope this helps |
