I HATE *HATE* WINDOWS!!

every single damn OS i have had past DOS has CRASHED HARD CORE on me..

win 95 SUCKED
win 98 SUCKED
win 98 SE good
win ME SUCKED
win 2K SUCKES!

I have a thread a couple of posts down with the info on WIN 2K...

so now my *NEW* problem... i fdisked.. lost everything.. reformatted.. went to NTSF....

now the system hangs.. sometimes right at boot.. sometimes in the middle of doing something.... *usually* when moving the mouse... but I unplugged the sucker... and it still crashed....

this is what I thought of:
#1 overheating... CPU temp @ 32-35 degrees when system locks...system temp @ 28 degrees.. so I ruled that out

#2 IRQ conflict... the best I came up with is that ACPI controller.. network controller .. and display controller all share IRQ 11 ... everything in device manager is perfect... ZERO conflicts...

#3 the MOUSE.. the system seemed to lock when I would do a mouse movement.. highlight something.. etc etc etc... so i unplugged it.. but the thing still freezes....

#4 hard drive bad sector.... ran NDD... found something weird with the boot sector.. did a reboot and it ran the proggie before booting windows.. did a full system check.. found aboslutely NOTHING.. even in the free space...

let me explain what hte freezing is like..... picture your hard drive spinning round and round while you do whatever it is you are doing... and it suddently just JAMS.. you have no control over ANY key function.. even the HDDLED freezes if you were doing something.. it is like a TOTAL SYSTEM SHUT DOWN!

I have an abit VA6 with an AMD DUron 750 on 256 megs of pc-100 kingston ram.. it has a built on sound card.. i have an AGP Matrox Millenium G200 and a network adapter...

I have an IOMEGA CD-RW and a 52x creative cd-rom...

my HD is a WD 45.0 gig 5200 RPM drive..

I have fdisked and installed NTSF... and formatted the drive through the setup files... but still the same error...

also... i tried to do a repair of the OS through the feature of booting up with the win2K cd ... but nothing ever seems to happen...

can ANYONE help?

this also happened while the system was a VIRGIN (no proggies installed... actually.. it happened at the end of installation.. when the software saves the PnP things it detected and does the final reboot....)

just a hunch. it could be nothing. find a friend and borrow their ram. take all of yours out and put theirs in. see if that works.

if that's not it. find a hdd known to be in good working condition and use that to replace your current drive. see if things are working then.

it really sounds to me like you have a bad component. you just need to hunt it down.

it's not a component.. i'm SURE of it..

my ram is fine.... the video card works fine.. and the network card works fine.... those are the only things in the PC..

the sound card is built on...

so the only thing that it could be is the MOBO.. which makes no sense.. cause the other day I had it running for like 8 hours.. while i was away.. to see if it would stall again... and it didn;t

so it rules out the possibility of me over heating.....

i really have no idea what the problem is... so i'm going to start where it is easiest.. and change my HD with WD .... and try a fresh start from there... with WIN ME... i don't want win2K

most of my games and proggies don't work with this crap anywys!

OK, take a deep breath and count to 10....

Better?

OK, here's something to try - check your hardware against the Microsoft Hardware Compatability List:

http://www.microsoft.com/hcl/default.asp

If all your hardware appears there, it could be a driver issue. Download the latest drivers for W2K for all your peripherals, including the mobo BIOS.

Don't load ME - that OS IS crap. W2K is much better. If you're really set against it though, load W98SE. Much more stable and hardware friendly than ME.
