Digital out to receiver

I'm having a problem connecting my soundblaster live w/digital out to my receiver so as I can play mp3's over the main stereo system. I keep getting this very loud hum over my main speakers and I don't know why (or how to fix/avoid this problem). Does anyone have a solution?

This may sound superiouly stupid but. . . are you sure your receiver has a digital input?

My receiver is the HarmonKardon AVR 100. It has a digital/optical/blah blah. Any ideas?

the cable isn't fully connected, or maybe it's picking up interference from somewhere, likely the computer?

GREAT!!!....now how about some possible solutions. I'd like to know if other people are experiencing the same sort of thing, and what they came up with to fix it. How about an idea about a top of the line sound card with all/most of the bells and whistles? Any information would be helpful at this point.

to be honest, I dunno. Are you sure you are using the right cable? Maybe people plug the wrong thing into the digital out.

I have the same setup you do, SB digital out -> reciever and it works just fine, just make sure all the cables are connected to the right places

It is possible that your speakers are simply turned up too high. You should turn your speakers down some and then adjust your system volume accordingly.

Tell us what has changed since you plugged in your computer into the receiver.

Was there a hum before?
Did you move the receiver closer to the computer?
Did you move the computer closwer to the receiver?
Did you move your speakers?
Did you re-route the speaker cables?

etc.. etc..

Humming tends to be reflected signal energy (AKA feedback) often caused be an impedence difference between the cabling and the system. You could also have a short. I would consider replacing your cable...try a 70 Ohm video cable.
