win2k file access

Oh well, this is a shot in the dark... I won't be able to look at the system until tonight..

My friend somehow screwed up his Win2K installation so it dies on startup, even with safe-mode and all line-by-line, etc. Unfortunately it was NTFS. So to backup some files, I hooked up his harddrive to my system so some files can be copied out. But there's some Outlook archives that has file permissions on them, so he wasn't able to access it.

Now, he does have a local account on that system. Is there someway I can access that file?

Sure, as long as you're logged in with Admin rights, you just take ownership of the files.

Go to the file properties.. Security tab.. Advanced.. Owner tab. Once you take ownership, you can give yourself permission to the file.

Yeah, it ended up being a lot easier than I thought. Just logged in to my machine as Admin and then I had access to the file already. Go figure :/

Sup guys...

I have a similar problem but there isnt any security tab....

i know you just got to the security tab and just take owner ship...

But when I got into properties... there isnt any Security tab... I seen it beforeon other systems.. but it is missing from this system.. there isnt any security tab... what is up with that?

Running XP Pro without SP1. Do I need to install SP1 for the tab?

What am I doing wrong.?

If you don't have the security tab, then you're either not logged in as admin, or your drive is not NTFS - only NTFS supports file level permissions. FAT32 only supports share level security, so in that case you'd have to check the share permissions.

In that case, share permssions don't matter if you're logged onto the local box. Share level permissions only take effect when you map a drive to the share.

well...

the drive was originally formated in NTFS, I just installed over the harddrive with out formating it....

it is still in NTFS..... but Security is missing from the properties and I cant access the old user folders....like Document and setting....

am I screwed?
