Mac+Router=Internet goodness. 98+Router=What is this InterWeb you speak of?
Okay, my 98 PC is connected to a Siemens Router du jour. And so is my trust iMac. The iMac gets an IP fine, and happily surfs the net. My evil demon 98 box grabs the IP of doom (192.168.crap.poo) and won't do anything. I don't get it. I've done a few networks in my time, and know how to set everything up properly...any ideas?

Not trying to sound condescending here so forgive me if I do. Are the link LEDs active on both the port that the Win98 computer is attached to as well as the NIC of the computer? You're not inadvertantly using a crossover cable, are you?
Just for the sake of testing, have you attempted to assign a static IP address to the Win98 machine? |

Yes, the lights are up, I've tried static IP, checked the settings on the router about 7 jillion times. And I made the cable myself, so i know it's straight through....any ideas? |

What happens when you try a static IP address? Can you ping the router or any other machine? BTW, what's the model of the router?

Are you sure the cable is good? Try swapping it with the one on the Mac. Are you running any firewall software on the 98 machine? This is a longshot, but is the DHCP on the router configured correctly (i.e., is there more than one address in the DHCP pool?)

is it possible to take the 98 machine somewhere else to see if it can get an IP period? there are all sorts of simple hardware solutions (bent pins on the port on the nic, unseated card) which could cause that problem.

What about the IP address range available to the router?

easiest solution in my mind would be to
smash the 9x box and get a second mac(ribitch prepares for any oncoming flames)
