KG7 motherboard issues
I had been dealing with an instable motherboard for about a year. (I'm actually rather ashamed of myself). The Abit K7G-RAID is a super sweet board, but I have and Athalon 1700+ XP chip in it, a Geforce2 video card and a soundblaster audigy. (I think the instability issues are surrounding the Geforce card.
Anyway, the system would crash intermittently especially if it gets a pseudo heavy load from a divx movie or something. Often it crashed in word which can be VERY annoying. I thought maybe it was the ram, but I have 1 256MB stick of crucial, so I didn't really think that was it. I thought maybe it was running too hot (it is an AMD chip). So I opened up my case and put a box fan next to it. The noise was terrible but it did seem to help stability a little. Long story short, GO on the web and search if you are having these problems. Lower the voltage of the memory (should be close to 2.5V) And manually change the CPU P/N values to 4, 04, 0D (actually my slew rate is at 7 I think). also set AGP Driving Control to EA (This is if you have a Geforce card). That is it. Fixed EVERYTHING. These are NOT things a normal person would ever change in the BIOS. I think it is ****ty that ABIT didn't fix these instabilities with BIOS upgrades (of which they have many), but none of the bios upgrades take into account the idea that the board supports both PC2400 DDR and SDRAM, and if people go the route of DDR, the voltage should be considerably lower. Anyway the moral of the story is that little annoyances that you think "oh well, I can live with it this way" will consume you from the inside out. You pay a nice chunk of change for your stuff make sure it is PERFECT. And at the first sign of trouble, do a goolge search because others probably have the same problem and someone has proabably fixed it. Just needed to share. - Evil Lord Drewcifer![]()
