Problem rebooting my laptop
Ok, start from the beginning.
I use a Compaq Prosignia 170, which I have had for about 2 to 2 1/2 years now. I have had VERY few problems with it up til now. I've never had to get anything fixed or replaced (other than the keyboard, but that was just cause a key kept clicking. lol). A few weeks ago, I needed to reboot my router (having problems with that, too, but... lol). So to get an internet connection, I ended up shutting down my computer (my laptop is my primary computer), turning off the modem & unplugging the router. Got the modem & router back up and turned on my laptop and during the reboot, Voila! BSOD I turned it off. Rebooted and kept getting that same error. Scott fixed it (at least temporarily) and got it back up and running. I have been able to reboot several times since then. Tonight, I was trying to fix my IE problem (see other thread), and decided to reboot again. It started up, got to the Compaq screen and froze. Nothing was happening (couldn't hear the hard drive running or anything), except for a little white flashy box thing up in the upper right hand corner. I waited for a bit, thinking it would resolve itself but nothing happened. I tried 4 times and each time, the same thing happened (keep in mind, I didn't get a BSOD. Just got nothing...). Scott came in and unplugged everything (the wireless card I have in there, the cat5 cable, cause my wireless had been acting up and cutting off downloads - related to my router problem I'm sure... - my power cord & my cordless mouse thing). He rebooted then and it came up. He shut it down, plugged one thing in and turned it on. Came up fine. Plugged another in and it came on fine. Another, etc etc. Please help! Does it sound like my hard drive on my laptop is going bad? *sigh* lol TIA! Jenny

It may be the wireless. If it's a PC card and it's defective it could be what prevented the computer from booting and cut off your internet connection. Have you tried other wireless devices with that computer since you seem to think it has something to do with the router. Or it could be the PC card slot. If you have a second slot, try switching the wireless card.

The wireless card is fairly new. I've had it for several months and had it in there for a couple of months before having any problems. The router issue is separate from the boot problem. I just mentioned it in passing.
![]() DF, for the life of me, I can't remember what the BSOD said. Do you really think it has anything to do with my OS? Cause the boot problem happens before it is even in the software part of it. Before any Windows screen or anything. Just gets to the Compaq screen. ![]() |

You never know what can cause the BSOD. One night I moved my computer into another room temporarily. When I moved it back, it suddenly wouldn't boot. BSOD. I'd never had a BSOD in WinXP before! I tried booting into safe mode, and still BSOD. I couldn't figure out for the life of me what happened! So I noted what file was causing the problem. Turns out it was a Logitech mouse driver. I unplugged the mouse and the BSOD was gone! I then plugged the mouse back in and checked the System properties and sure enough there was an exclamation point next to the mouse. I rebooted, BSOD. Unplugged the mouse again and then removed and reinstalled the drivers and everything worked perfectly after. So, next time you get the BSOD keep track of what file name it gives. That will give you a starting point in tracking down the problem.

Oh, I don't know. But it makes me wonder. I haven't had to reboot again yet, but if it happens again, I'll be sure and check the message and to unplug the mouse first.

I've had logitech mouse drivers mess me up while booting to windows, but it seems like your problem is happening during hardware intialization. Hopefully it was just a loose connection to something pluggable.
