Question about editiing GIF/JPG files

what's the best program (preferrably free) to do it and how do you do it with that program?

You can always try The Gimp. Open source PhotoShop like program. The link is to the windows download page. (But if you are running Linux or another OS you can find the downloads on that site as well)

It's a little harder to get used to then PhotoShop, but from what I can tell it does everything that PS does and is free. (I belive it can even use PS plugins)

What type of editing are you trying to do? If it is simple red eye or cropping you are trying to accomplish I would keep it to a simple program, You can usually find these programs accompanied with new hardware you purchased, for example a digital camera, or they may be available as free-ware. If your looking to add objects and what not maybe some writing you could use an art program like Printmaster, its easy to use and you can re-save it in any format you like.

Yeah, if you're looking for FREE, I'd go with some GIMPage action.

Although, the GIMP does not really support the GIF format.

I dunno... just was wondering. Sometimes my new avatars are too big and I need to shrink the size

MS Paint will suffice then.

MS Paint still don't do .jpg or .gif formats.

I use Paint Shop Pro here.

Paint doesn't, but MS Photo Editor does. It's bundled with Office and for some reason not installed by default. If you pop the CD in & run setup, you can choose it from the office tools list (I think).

Nice & simple for doing little things like resizing, cropping, etc. & it's free as long as you have MS Office.

DOH! I forgot about that. Although I belive there is a version that has gif support built in. It's not strictly legal to use it in the US though, because of .gif format license issues.

well, if you want a totally free, simple, yet powerful program, try IrfanView.

http://irfanview.com/

its a very small yet pwerful program, and its freeware - no nags, no ads, no spyware. I use it to view my image files. It does image reduction, image conversion of almost ALL the image filetypes you can imagine, does a great slideshow, and doesnt eat up a lot of resources. It can even play multimedia files if you assign them to it.
I use photoshop if i want to do something tricky, but you cant beat irfanview for simple tasks.
did i say its free?
