Argh..Gator

I've used lavasoft Ad-Aware and Spybot to clean up my computer. However Gator seems to very entrenched. Both programs detect and say they get rid of it but everytime I run Spybot it's there again. Sigh...any other programs out there?

Use the find feature in Windows to find all of it AND run regedit and get rid of it manually. That's what I usually do.

I don't think this'll stop anything though - the better you idiot-proof a system, the more impressive the idiot becomes.

I searched my computer for "host" files and found some gator files. I got rid of those, too.

Ad Aware 6.0 (from download.com) works wonders when getting rid of Gator. You need to click the 'get update' so it can update its latest 'ad' definitions.

Yah I got ZoneAlarm and it's been blocked. Ad-Aware wasn't so effective with the updates. Sigh...just annoying.

Odd problem...an updated spybot always seems to get rid of Gator when I get it.

I would see if maybe it's embedded in something you downloaded. (Divx codecs for example

I haven't checked to see if spybot could remove gator without touching the codec.

I hope they pass some kind of laws making it illegal for anyone to secretly dump spyware on my machine. I'd also prefer if they actually enforced it.

Well I'm running Win XP. Could it be that I have another user area? My gf has her win XP user login area and I have mine. Ad-Aware was installed on both as well as Zone Alarm. Wiping it out on one side doesn't wipe it out on the other side?

BTW...I'm still working on getting rid of the hi-jacked porn link you get whenever you right click an IE window.

This is a long-shot but, some users have experienced problems deleting files whether manually or through another program when Norton anti virus 2003 or Norton System works 2003 is running. This is because Norton has decided that users aren’t competent enough to delete their own files for good. Most people do not even know this option is installed automatically. To see if Norton has these files backed up, open up Norton Antivirus, click Advanced tools (fourth row on left), Then "UnErase Wizard" click start tool. Check the radio button saying "Find all protected files on local hard drives" click next. It will do some searching and if you have any you can right click them and tell Norton 2003 to get rid of them, and then click finish. Now I had the problem that I couldn’t get Norton to get rid of the files, so I had to uninstall Norton. Good luck and I help this hope all of you.

I got Gator when I downloaded DIVX from their official site. It really messed things up- I kept getting kicked off the internet. I tried using the File Delete, but that didn't get rid of all of it. I used the DIVX uninstall and even that wasn't enough to clear it out. Then I ran AdAware and that finally cleared things out and now I am fine. I'll live without a DIVX player- it isn't worth that hasele.
