Help: getting a HD error, unable to access drive
that's the error I keep getting while attempting to access the drive. I have two drives that are doing the same thing. They are all the WD 120GB SE. I've ran the WD Diagnostic Tools, in hopes that it would resolve the issue, but that said no errors. I'm unable to run an error check in windows. When I use the WinXP defragmentation, the drive won't show up. It gives me the error "Disk Defragmenter cannot run on this volume type". I'm running WinXP. Originally, it was running on my 3Ware RAID card -- which reports that the HD is operational. The HD's will show up on boot, and in windows, but I just can't do anything with it. I haven't changed any other setting. Any thoughts? I've got lots of stuff in the drives, so I'd like formatting to be the last resort. |

boot into DOS and run scandisk, but you are probably running NTFS like everyone else but me these days. Also, double check your jumper settings, try a different cable, double check the driver windows has applied. is your windows XP fully updated?

I'm not familiar with RAID, but I would assume that drives on a raid system would store data differently from standard ide. You will probably have to put them back on the raid card to access the data again.

Yeah, if these two drives were originally in a RAID configuration, they will not be operable outside of the RAID controller.

I run the drives off a RAID controller, but I don't have it set under any RAID. I use it pretty much as an extra HD controller, and am able to swap it to the on-board controller fine. All the drives are formatted using NTFS. Three of the drives work perfectly fine. The other two keep giving me errors, whether I put it on the RAID controller or on the on-board controller. All of them are the same WD 120GB SE.
As for the jumper settings, all of them are on Cable Select. I've also used different cables, and it's always the same two drives. |

Try not using cable select, I have actually run into problems using cable select. I know this is such a little thing, but this vould possible be the answer, it never hurts to try. I personally never use cable select anymore because I have had problems before.

Hopefully it's not your Pr0n man... that would be a travesty.
If it is, we'll take up a collection (of Pr0n) and get you back up to speed!

I'll give it a shot when I get back home. ![]() And nope SnotRocket, believe it or not, I don't watch that stuff nor do I collect. One of the drives had my tv shows, and the other had anime, music videos, and other crap I think. all that hard work to collect it... ![]() |

I guess if you get it back online, you'll take advantage of one of the CDR deals and back up your hard earned multimedia now no?
He he. Let us know if it works out. If it was just one drive, I'd say its bad, but since it's two I would say it has to be some kind of corruption. P.S. DO NOT RUN SCANDISK ON IT FROM DOS. XP does not support scan disk from does and you WILL hoes those drives BIG TIME if you try to force it. Run CHKDSK instead with the /F option to fix File Table damage. |
