wireless home network setup
I have a broadband connection connected to a wireless router. I also have two computers with ethernet cards in each, and a switch. I don't want to run wires all over the place and I don't want to have to get a USB 802.11b connection for each computer that comes along.
What are my options? Can I buy a WAP and connect it to my switch and then connect cables from the switch to the two computers? Will the computers be able to grab IPs from the wireless router? Will port-forwarding work correctly so that I can still server http/ftp? Should I get another wireless router instead and then disable DHCP to use as an access point only? |

You can buy PCI Wi-Fi adapters. I use one from linksys and it works great. Used an 802.11b one and no problems, then just upgraded to g and still no problems.
All you need to do is get an access point since you already have a router and attach it to the router. The computers connecting to it will get IPs assigned to them by the router. Port forwarding will be controlled by the router not the AP and should not be a problem. I would recommend sticking with separate units as you can play with the position of the AP and move it around for better signals plus always nice as you can upgrade easily without having to change the whole router. |

Just becareful if you have a crappy 2.4gig telephone. Some of my friends experience connectivity problems when the phone is in usage.

yeah... I had to switch to 900mhz. It interferes with speed if someone in the house is using it. I agree with spigidygak.. get a Wi-Fi adapter. They work well... well I have linksys as well and it's never given me any problems.
