blue screen error

Help!
Okay, so my laptop (Ashton Digital) has become unstable. PIII 1.0GHz, 256 RAM, WinXP Pro. First year I owned it, it was okay. Now, crashes occur randomly, giving the blue screen. Could go a few hours or only a few minutes between crashes. I've tried fresh installs of 98/ME/XP, still occurs. I've also used other RAM, still occurs. It's also not a heating issue since it can be on for half a day and not crash.

I set windows to not auto reboot when error occurs. Sample error gives a 'STOP: 0x00000050'.

Anybody know how to interpret error, or know who can? btw, I checked my BIOS and there's no "memory caching or shadowing"

Cheers,
John

Have you formatted after all these OS changes? If you format and its still crashing then its definitly a hardware issue, which on a laptop, is tough to deal with.

The next step is to try a new HD. Have you tried a surface scan of the HD?

Cantac: yah, I've formatted it every time. Using either low level format (Maxblast) or WinXP Pro disk.

ceeka: no, one thing I haven't tried is different hard drive. I've surface scanned/defragged mine after fresh install... still not helpin. I wish laptop HD's were easier to come by.

Thanks guys

I'm hoping somebody can interpret the errors given.

This is most likely a memory ram problem. If not that there is a conflict in irqs on the PCI bus.

irq conflict

spigidygak,

I've tried using my friends laptop RAM in mine, and it still crashes.

Oh wow, taking a look at my PCI devices, IRQ 5 is being used for several pieces of hardware.

Man, ever since dip switching and manually setting IRQ's went away, I've become naive with this. How can I manually manage IRQ's in XP? Why is WinXP doing this with IRQ 5?

Suggestions?

Cheers,
John

Have you tried selling that piece on ebay and buying a Dell inspiron for $674?

Welp that irq is whats bsod'ing you then. I think you gotta set the channels in the bios. Or for each device in device manager for each one eating up on that channel.

You can't set IRQ's in WinXP. My desktop doesnt share any IRQ's, and I want my laptop to do the same! My laptop BIOS has nothing about IRQ settings... what to do... what to do...

If you'll search google for the stop errors code: '0x00000050'

You'll find a ton of stuff.. some of them talk about 3rd party printer drivers on a Terminal Server. Because your laptop is running XP Pro, technically it is running Terminal Services.

Some info:
http://support.microsoft.com/support.../Q249/9/17.asp
http://northtechs.com/blscreen.htm

It could be a lot of things besides this.. most of the problems relate to faulty or incorrect drivers and/or possibly bad hardware.

That's not true actually. Open up device manager and double click on your sound card for example. Click on the resources tab... You'll see the current irq. If you uncheck the "automatic configuration" tab, you can happily change the irq's and memory ranges.

try this, perhaps

I had similar errors occur on my system, and mine ended up being a driver problem. Update both your audio and video drivers to the absolute latest ones. Also, check your antivirus software (if you're running it) for any updates, as some antivirus programs will cause problems with Windowds that cause random BSOD's.

You must not be running WinXP. The auto config check box in the resources tab is greyed out for IRQ's.

UPDATE!
Mine too appears to be a driver problem. Here's the deal, after a fresh install of XP and no other software, my system crashed after a few minutes when running XP (installation went fine though). Win XP recognized my network card, pcmcia, etc..., but didn't recogonize modem or sound card. Next, for the drivers XP installed, I updated them to older drivers from the original installation disk that came with laptop (what!?). I say update, cuz you can't uninstall, then install older version...because when you go to install new hardware, XP finds the uninstalled driver and puts it back. You actually instead need to go through the 'update' button to manually update to an older driver from say a floppy or cd. My system has been running fine for over 24hrs, and I've install additional programs without trouble.

SO HEARS THE LESSON LEARNED!
New drivers are not better drivers.
Sometimes you may have to go with older drivers that came with hardware.
