pc won't boot - cpu or mother board?
I've got a problem - my PC won't boot. When I turn it on - I get nothing not even a beep, Although the LED Lights are on (HDD indicator LED (not HDD light) and System). I don't even get the CMOS display and mem check - nadda. I unplugged every card and reseat the Video Card (asus) - Still nothing. The power supply is okay (this powers 2 additional fans in the system ) and checked for voltages in the Motherboard PS connector - okay. The video card looks good since the onboard fan for this is running okay.
I do not think it's the memory since I did not get a beep, I disconnected everything except the VidCard, keyboard & mouse. I assume I'ts either the mother board (abit K7) or the CPU (athlon k7 750 Mhz SLot A) but have no way to test it in other systems. I'm leaning towards the CPU since I can see the System/HDD LED getting powered and also the Video Card Fan is working (which gets powered by the slot, right?) Is there a sure fire method to determine which one? again, there are no system beeps..... any suggestions? |

This may or may not be helpful, but since you ddn't mention it, it's worth a shot.
Does your MB had a display actually on the MB? Mine does, and it gives a numeric code for any errors and such. ...I assume you'd mentioned that if you had it. |

DarkFury...thanks but I'm pretty sure it's not the vidcard (since there are no beeps)....i've been using this Pc for the last 2+ years without a hitch until yesterday.....(so I know it's not a compatibility problem)
I'm pretty sure it's either the CPU or MOBO but can't exactly say which one. I have no resources for troubleshooting (no extra MB/CPU lying around) and my friends PC's are not compatible with mine. I just want to know which one before I get a replacement and find out it's the other |

and by the way...I'm leaning towards the CPU as the problem source since I do get an LED light on and my vidcards and cpu fan is being powered by the MOBO....

That's a toss up, all right. Did you try powering up without your processor installed? If you give that a try & you get some error beeps, then it's likely your processor.
Of course, if you get the same 'nothing' you're getting now it could still go either way. |

Thanks for all your replies.....
I think It may be the MOBO after all.....I removed the MOBO/CPU from the case and on closer inspection...looks like some of the capacitors may have leaked.....as there are traces of what looks like mud on top and bottoms of some of them..... ![]() what could have caused it....i still don't know..... may be the power supply is giving out erroneous voltage?....hmmmm...I do have a surge protector connected so I guess power spikes should be taken care of...?....(although I have it connected to a 40ft garden cord....?) and is on the same circuit as my outside lines (where I usually connect my Electric Trimmer...... damn....I probably have to find out before I buy a new one...or the same thing might happen..... next dilemma is whether to get just a Slot A mobo (which is pretty rare nowadays) or just go for the newer (and faster) MOBO/CPU/Memory combo.... ![]() |
