Win XP Pro questions

I recently installed Win XP pro as a second operating system on my desktop in an attempt to fix a bunch of minor irriations that this old system was giving me. The XP is actually on a 30 gig HD that is separate from the old HD (in otherwords, I have the original system install on a 13gig hd with Win98se, then I installed a new 30 gig Hd and did a fresh install of Win XP pro on it) The 98 doesnt detect the other drive, but the Win XP does. When the system boots up I have to chose which OS to go into. So that is all working fine...here are my problems.

Win Xp keeps giving me a system debugger option whenever I am viewing web pages. If I say yes, it goes in and then says there is a line error and then goes to break it. I obviously dont want to be doing that so I just hit no instead. This error is happening relatively frequently and is quite annoying.

Secondly, certain websites are telling me that I need to install virtual Java Machine from install on demand. When I say yes, it starts but then never installs it.

Now I have never installed Win XP service pack 1 because I was told that it will mess up your system. I dont know if this is true or not, but the amount of problems I am having are driving me nuts and I am thinking that the Service Pack might fix them.

Anyone have any idea about this.

Thanks.

I have XP Home and got the service pack. It did nothing to my computer. I know it's not Pro, but it's basically the same thing right?

I don't think this'll stop anything though - the better you idiot-proof a system, the more impressive the idiot becomes.

I've ran into these problems and they are easily solved.....first...with the debugging. head to "tools...internet options...then the advanced tab" in internet explorer....check the "disable script debugging" box under the browsing headline.

Now, for your java...head over to http://wwws.sun.com/software/download/
and download their java platform.

hope this helps

Re: Win XP Pro questions

Actually for the Java VM, you should just run Windows Update and you'll be all set.

Actually under the Windows Updater on my computer there are only a few items that are even available for me to choose from. None of which seem to deal with the Java VM. Either way, I finally get my DSL on Monday (supposedly) so I will do the large service pack update then. Hopefuly that will fix the problem.

Java VM is no longer included in Windows update... some deal with a lawsuit between Sun and MS. Google it, there's plenty of places that have it available for download... and if you still cant get it, PM me, I have the installer...

As part of our January 2001 settlement agreement with Sun, which was intended to resolve disputes concerning Microsoft’s development and distribution of the Microsoft virtual machine (Microsoft VM), Microsoft will no longer be authorized by Sun to have the ability to support the Microsoft VM after January 2, 2004. As a result, we will stop including the Microsoft VM in new releases of Windows and other products, and we will stop distributing Microsoft® Visual J++® as well...

...We have started removing the Microsoft VM from new products going into distribution. Specifically, this means that we will not include the Microsoft VM in any Windows releases from this point forward, including service packs. We will also not distribute new versions of the Microsoft VM via download from our Web site.

Interesting... I didn't realize that Microsoft got ham-strung in that settlement.
