netgear wireless adapter problem
my apartment has set up a wireless network. we are currently using the Netgear MR814NA Cable/DSL Wireless Router w/ 4 Port Switch 802.11B with Earthlink cable internet.
the problem is, i got a netgear wirless usb adapter for my desktop. i figured that usb would be easy to use, and if other people wanted to connect, they could use the adapter as well. however, i noticed some seriously lagging, mainly in video games. I tested the connection over two games: CS and Warcraft3. cs depends on the server and the other plays involved; but if the server lags, other people would complain as well. there were no complaints from the other players, and the lag occured almost every 3 mins or so. on warcraft, the servers are from b.net,...so it's obivous that it is my connection and not anyone else's. although it may be the router, i tested the usb adapter on my laptop, and it the results were the same. i have a d-link wirless notebook card and my laptop experienced no lag in warcraft or cs. so my question is....is there anything else i can do to let my usb adapter perform at max capability? i tried downloading the new driver at the netgear site, but it didnt change anything. so yeah....any ideas? sorry for the long post...=p |

I've had this problem before...are you using the Netgear MA101 wireless adapter? and if so, are you running windows XP? If yes to both of those questions, I can help you out....the solution is actually a pain in the arse because Windows XP doesn't like going to the set of drivers that you need that actually work properly. To determine if your problem is similar to the problem I had, find a large file on your network (such as a movie that's like 700 megs) and transfer it from your computer with the netgear adapter to another computer on your network. Now while this is transferring, press ctrl+alt+delte and go to the "networking" tab..now go to "view" then select columns....make sure to put a check next to "bytes sent/interval" and "bytes received/interval"...now you will see a cool bar showing your network utilization and if you're having the problem that I think you are, every couple of minutes you will see your green bar drop completely to 0% utilization for a few seconds then kick back up. If this is what is happening, let me know and I will tell you how to fix it.
**I had this problem around christmas and posted it in the thread here (wireless network / broadband problem) there used to be a picture that helped describe the scenario, but it's gone now.

absolutely....it's kind of a pain, though....
alright, first thing you gotta do is go to the netgear website and download the version 2.0 drivers (yes, the older ones). Now...the tricky part....you have to convince windows XP that you want to use these older drivers....I've had to do this about 10 times, but I still never get it right on the first try.... warning: simply installing the setup program that comes with the drivers will NOT install the drivers! netgear lies to us. lol ok, right click on my computer, go to properties, then head over to the hardware tab and go to the device manager. located under "network adapters" should be your netgear card....right click on the netgear card and go to properties....head over to "driver" and take note of which driver and date you're currently using....now press update driver then install from a specific location then say "dont search, ill tell you which driver im gunna install you piece of crap" now press have disk. and refer it to the XP directory in the folder you just downloaded from the netgear website.....windows XP may insist that the drivers aren't right or something, eventually after messing around with this you'll get it to install some drivers that work....they should be 1.3.4.124 from 5/30/2002 ..... you will know it has worked when you transfer a file and after several minutes you have no loss in your connection. It's really a pain in the arse, but I'm sure you'll figure it out eventually. |

It might actually be the firmware that it changes when changing the drivers too....maybe that's what's causing the problem. Either way, if you keep telling it to change the drivers, I promise it will eventually work.

firmware? could you elborate?
exactly which driver did you use? the one for xp? the one from \MA101v20\MA101_SW directory (before the xp directory)? i've tried both, plus the drivers from the v2.1 ("basic" driver, xp driver)....and i'm still lagging on battle.net. |

sorry I didn't come back to reply sooner, I didn't notice you were still having problems....what I have done now is went step by step on my computer how to fix this problem and tried to outline how to do it...so follow these steps..
1) get the ma101 v1.1drivers 2) type service.mscthen a window will popup, go the the bottom of the list and u will see wireless zero configuration, disable that. 3) open the netgear 1.1 program after the installation 4) restart the computer |

The version 1.1 drivers should work in XP because there's an XP subfolder when you extract the drivers, I'm using XP too, in fact this wlreless adapter only has problems when running on XP. The 1.1 drivers should be in the subdirectory \MA101_SW\WINxp when you extract them from the compressed file. If those aren't the 1.1 drivers then that's my mistake...but the ones that come in that directory are the ones you want. You can force it to update it through the hardware manager and go to network adapters then right click on the netgear wireless adapter and tell it to update the driver. Sorry about messing up on step 2....I meant to type service.msc in the 'run' screen which is reached from the start menu -> run. This should bring you to the windows services screen....from there scroll nearly to the bottom and there will be a service called "windows wireless zero configuration" stop that process and disable it from starting with windows. Then it's necessary to restart the computer. Hopefully after this the wireless adapter will work properly. Last edited by PrObLy : 08-05-2003 at 09:39 AM. |

Uh... i dunno about you, but when I disable wireless zero configuration, the adapter stops working entirely... also, i think you driver version 1.3.4.124 is in the 2.1 version. the 2.0 version has driver 1.3.3.99 |

hmm... weird... for the v2.1, theres two drivers in the XP folder, one named ma101 and one named netvusb.
i tried both those files and my driver was still 1.3.3.99 for some reason, i'm unable to get to 1.3.4.124 ![]() |

DaFunkyUnit, are you sure you switched to the 2.1 driver? That is 1.3.4.124. And regarding disabling "wireless zero configuration", I was having some trouble with that earlier as well... but I found that enabling it (so the internet connection is up) and THEN disabling it should work (without dropping your connection). Oh and I use ma101 not netvusb.

sorry to be beating a dead horse, but I've finally got the adapter to work. Turning off the "wireless zero config" works. However, I have to do that everytime I boot up, since it has to be on for WinXP to make the connection. Is there a way around this annoyance?

Instead of manually stopping the service just write a quick batch file and put it on your desktop or start menu so you can stop it with one click.
Open up notepad and type the following: net stop wzcsvc save the file as any name you want ending in .bat e.g.: killwzc.bat Now just right click on the file and choose "Create Shortcut" and put it on your desktop. Now, after your comp has started up and the network is OK, you just click on that shortcut and your all set!

Oh sheezy SnotRocket you're too cool for school. I hope it works. I usually have to stop and then start the zero config... should I add a second line there that says "net start wzcsvc" ?

I was under the impression that you can permanently disable it in a similar manner that you disable it regularly....by making its startup type "disabled" it wont load anymore.

even better: why not put the shortcut in the Startup folder so that Windows will automatically do it every time it boots up. |

You could, but it might make it run before the machine has found and authenticated the wireless signal. In other words, your stopping it too soon. Try it in the Startup folder, but if it doesn't work it's prolly cuz it's happening prior to full wireless initialization. |
