need help setting up a wireless network

Ok... so here's the deal. My roommate and I just moved to downtown chicago and we ordered up DSL service from comcast. Anyways, they send us this modem that they say has wireless capabilities, but only a range of 8 feet. So, they say that we will need to get an "adaptor" to increase the distance. Personally, I don't think that the tech. support person there knows what she's talking about. Anyways, so my roommate and I were looking to just set up our own wireless system... i.e. get a wireless bridge and two wireless cards (both of us have laptops). Is that all we will need? Does anyone know of a good place where we can buy them, etc... Any info/advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If you're just going to be doing websurfing/email etc... I'd suggest the following:

Netgear MR814 802.11b Wireless router:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...onics&n=507846

Netgear MA401 Wireless Network Card:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...onics&n=507846

If you are looking for more speed between the laptops, get the 802.11G router and nics. Mind you, this will not speed up your internet connection which prolly has a max speed of 10mbps anyway.

Thanks for the info. Acutally, I ordered the wireless router on the deals page from office depot, so we'll see how that works.
