Program Re-install

I had a program that was removed accidentally but it is not gone enough. I try to run either Uninstall from the original disc or Add/Delete Programs and get a message saying that it cannot find the proper files. Doing a file search I find three items which when I point my mouse at, say they are empty, but if I click DELETE, I get either of two messages: "Cannot delete xxxx, the directory is not empty" or "Cannot delete file, cannot read from the source or disc." If I click on OPEN, it says "Disc C Not Formatted, Format Now?" where I click "NO". It still shows up in my list of programs. When I try to put in the original disc to try to re-install it, I don't get a prompt to install, only uninstall so I guess it thinks I still have it in, which I don't. Is there another way to get rid of tne null files? I would like to put it back in. The short cuts were still in the system, but didn't go anywhere. Based on my HDD capacity, the program is gone, not hiding. thanks for any suggestions!

first things first , go to the directory that teh program is installed in right click on the folder and choose properties and make sure the folder is not read only then check the properties of the files in the folder as well and make sure that the files are not read only if they are checked as read only then un check them and delete the directory and files. next down load TweakUI from Microsoft.com and use that program to remove the program from your add remove programs list. now you should be able to reinstall. if the CD does not auto start then go to My computer, right click on the CD drive then choose auto run. if that does not work then click on the CD drive and look for a file that says setup or install or soemthing like that.

I am making progress. When I tried to run Uninstall, it said file XXXX missing, abort or ignore. I first tried ignore, but more files kept popping up. I decided to follow this all the way thorugh, so for over half an hour I quickly clicked on the Ignore box and hundreds of files. I finally got it to say Finished. It is gone from the list of programs, but there is still one empty, file left that says "directory not empty" when I try to delete it.. I will try you suggestion on that. I do get an install prompt, but when it starts to load the first files for the game, I get this message:

Component: Player Data files

File Group: Common Player Data Files

File :xxxxx

Error:The Drive cannot find the sector requested

Then if I click OK, the install is aborted.

Edit: I clicked Properties and unchecked Read Only, The file says 0 bytes but still will not delete. Clicking on Explore it says "disc C not Formatted: Format now?" where I click No.

That sounds bad that sounds like you have some bad sectors on your harddrive or your Hard drive may be failing my advice to you is to back up all of your important files Word & Excel doc's Ect things you created your self. Then run a through Scandisk and check the disk for errors

I am not sure what OS you are using but to get Scan disk to run in Win Xp go to My computer and Right Click on your hard drive and choose properties, then choose the tools tab and choose error checking. and choose to automaticly fix errors and to recover bad sectors. then Go to the same place to defrag your drive. if you happen to Have Norton Disk Doctor that program would be even better to use. Good Luck ... .

Fantastic GilbertsGrape! I did the disc check which took about an hour and a half, but it found quite a few things. I was having problems and ended up having to reinstall XP recently. If I had known about this then, I may have been able to prevent that. It took a couple of times to get the game back in- first time it stopped and went to reboot, the second it froze up 99% of the way through and I had to do it again. It is working now. I ran a defrag prior to the new install of XP. This is my first computer (January) and there are still many things to learn. Thanks to you and all of the other posters on this forum!
