Is my network Fried
Hey folks,
I was gone for the weekend and when I got back I found my cisco678 (DSL Modem) powerless and my Linksys 10/100 5port Switch (EZXS55W) shows the power led, but shows no connection to any of my computers, and my computers are not networked now. Luck me I got the modem via Qwest 2 years ago, also it is past warranty and quest won’t help, they just offer that we can send you a modem that you can rent for $5/month. Meanwhile I have a dead $375 piece of plastic!! (The computers still work; I just need to find a hub/switch to test the network cards) I tried two different power cords and still nothing from the modem (I must be fried) as for the switch, I took it to my work and plugged the computers into it there and the same thing, no juice no network. So what do you all think are they fried? They both were plugged into a surge protector, but I didn’t have the phone line protected, do you think that’s how they fried? The computers were turned off, but do you folks think that the network cards in them are dead to? Its good timing and all that this happened now, because the cable guys are suppose to come this week and hook up cable internet. Qwest has almost lost here. Thanks for all you comments, Corey |

From the symptoms you're posting, I'd say that your stuff is indeed fried.
I'd suggest the following as a replacement. It's a cable modem/router/Wirelss all in ONE unit... http://www.netgear.com/products/prod...ID=160&view=hm ![]()

Sorry about your stuff being fried....
![]() I'd suggest buying a new unit however I'd strongly suggest that you NOT buy a Netgear product; personally I hate Netgear; their products have given me nothing but headaches and tons of aggravation in the past, their tech support has been relegated to people who have no computer knowledge whatsoever and talk with an accent, and their routers will drop your internet connection on an hourly basis for no reason (at least mine did, and several of my friends' have as well). I bought a Linksys router and have never looked back; I love it, it's never given me one single problem. |

Zero2,
While I definitely think you should post your experiences with a product, saying that a brand is bad wholesale based on your experience alone is a little premature. If Netgear (or anyone else's) stuff was that bad, they'd be out of business. I personally have had nothing but good experiences with netgear. As for their support, I've had them give me highly advanced router config solutions when I was trying to do some insane things with my network. If I want to find the overall quality of a company, I'll check out epinions.com or the reviews on Cnet or Amazon. The Netgear wireless router I have for example has an average rating of 4 out of 5 stars on 242 reviews. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...stomer-reviews I do think Linksys is a pretty equal brand, and NO I don't work for Netgear. I just don't like seeing a product or brand totally trashed over one person's bad experience. Quote:
I do have a major problem with that statement though. Are you trying to say that if someone doesn't speak with the same accent you have, they are stupid? You obviously have not had much exposure to the people of the world. I work at an international company and my group alone has at least 8 different countries represented as well as people from all over the States. I respect and admire the knowledge that most of my coworkers have and don't give a crap how they pronounce it. Discriminating against someone for how they speak is right up there with discriminating for the color of the skin as far as I'm concerned. You apparently have a lot to learn about the world. ![]() Quote:

My point was that how am I supposed to get quality technical support if I can't understand what the person on the other end of the phone is saying? That comment has nothing to do with the comment before it, separated by a comma, which is that these people have no computer knowledge. I could care less about race; anyone who knows me in real life knows I f*cking HATE racism. I may be the whitest white boy cracker ass out there but I've got plenty of friends who are other races (black and asian primarily) and I've spent plenty of nights in chatrooms bashing the holy hell out of people who jump from room to room saying the 'n' word. I understand where your post is coming from, however it sounds like you're trying to label me a racist and that's a load of bullcrap. ![]() Last edited by zero2dash : 07-23-2003 at 09:54 PM. |
