I'm using a Netgear router MR814 with the latest firmware 4.11
The problem I have is that the internet connection would work for a while.. ranging about 30-60 minutes and then it stop working all of sudden - totally no internet connection. I try to shut off the power of the router and turn it back on. Internet connection works again! This keep on happening and I'm getting sick and tired of it. Please help!!! |

This is actually a common problem, especially when using windows XP...this is what I did to solve the problem
1) go to the start menu, go to run... type services.msc .... scroll to near the bottom of the list and find "wireless zero configuration" tell it to stop running and to not load with windows 2) go to add/remove programs and find windows hotfix Q815485 ... remove that 3) restart your computer 4) if problem persists, disable DMZ server and the WEP encryption 5) if it still happens, there's some beta firmware floating around somewhere that might be able to help

Hi Probly,
Thanks for your help. I hope this works. I just don't understand how disabling the "wzc" has to do with the router. I have an old belkin router before and never has this problem. Also, I want to ask if you have experienced a problem where when you computer first starts up and windows is loaded. The first try to connect to the internet "ALWAYS" fail. Then I wait and try again, it works. Thanks!!! |

From what you described, it sounds like it is prolly something wrong with your Network Card or your PC. Upgrade your NIC to the latest firmware and download the latest drivers from the manufacturer.

Since the netgear mr814 is a wireless router, if you're using a wireless card to access it (especially if it's a netgear card) the wireless zero config messes with it, some sort of compatability issue. I'm not sure exactly why it can mess things up, I just know that disabling it and uninstalling that windows hotfix solved the problem for me and several other people. Be sure to lemme know if this solved (or at least greatly reduced the number of disconnects) your problem. You can read up more on this problem here and here and about the first try for you to connect to the internet not working, I assume that it just takes the wireless card several seconds to get fully set up on your network. |

that is strange....did you uninstall hotfix Q815485 ... that was the one thing in particular that caused mine to crash all the time.
**oh, and these things might have to be done on each computer connected to the network (the wireless zero configuration and the hot fix removal) I'm not positive, but it's worth a try. Last edited by PrObLy : 08-12-2003 at 12:36 PM. |
