Thanks for the quick reply!!!! I looked over in the hardware forum, but most posts are regarding connecting two computers together, AND to the net. We dont need to connect to the net. Once i purchase a cross-over cable, and connect our two PC's together, could u tell me what i have to do next? thanks again!

Unhappy

Hi, i have a question regarding connecting a computer to a computer. My brother and I both have computers and they are right next to eachother. We both have Ethernet cards, and i tried to connect them together with a cable. We are trying to play Unreal Tournament over LAN. Is this possible without a HUB? If not, anyone know of a good place i can pick one up?(also suggestions as to what type of HUB would be greatly appreciated).
I am sorry for posting this here, but everyone here seems soo smart, i know someone can help me.

If you are connecting ONLY 2 computers you DON'T need a hub. But the cable you use must be a CROSS-OVER cable as opposed to your regular ethernet cables.
If you are connecting more than 2 computers you could use a hub or a swtich. Check out the posts in the Hardware forums (there are a few topics on it and some great responses)

Try www.homepclan.com . It's a great site with step-by-step instructions and troubleshooting.

Quick answer -

2 PCs - 2 Network cards - 1 crossover cable.

Both machines must be in the same workgroup - 'workgroup' is fine.

Both must have unique machine names -e.g., 'machine1' and 'machine2'

Give 'machine1' IP address 10.0.0.1, subnet mask 255.255.255.0. Don't need a gateway.

Give 'machine2' IP address 10.0.0.2, subnet mask 255.255.255.0 - no gateway.

Reboot both machines, & if the computer gods are not angry, you'll be up & running. You should be able to see each other in Network Neighborhood.
