Red face

Hi again, more comp problems from me, except this one is more sinister than last time.
Background: When my IBM drive had to be replaced, I left all my MP3s on it, about 12 GB to be exact. Now, I want to move my mp3s to my new drive and send the old drive away to IBM, but whenever Windows is starting, it starts the bootup scandisk, which immediately freezes my comp, no matter what. My question is, how can I get scandisk to stop popping up (because I am pretty sure it boots normally w/o it), or how can I otherwise backup my files to the other drive.

Thanx for your help,
-Roger

P.S.: I know what you're thinking, just use DOS MOVE command right? Well... any time I move a file or dir with that command, it constricts the file name length to 8 chars, making all my meticulously named mp3s horrendously HARD to name. I REALLY don't want to go through thousands of mp3s, to rename each one.

UPDATE: I am now (in dos) deleting all the dirs besides the ones I want to backup. I hope that deleting my \Windows dir will keep the scandisk prompt from coming up. Wish me luck!

No no, it IMMEDIATELY crashes. I have even tried holding down ENTER, it just crashes whenever scandisk tries to run. I have a feeling that this is due to a problem with my boot sector, and that scandisk crashes because it is scanned first. It is probably not a bad installation of the OS, because it would start normally until the bad sector problems started.
Does anybody know if it's just me, or something else in my comp? In the past year or so, I have had to return and replace about 5 hard drives (3 Western Digital and 2 IBM)... Maybe I am doing something wrong? My roomates seem to think I overuse them

Any ideas?

-Roger

P.S.: Thanx for replying, chosenfool

You should re-boot the PC in safe mode. Press f8 when you see the "starting windows98" message in dos. Then boot in command prompt only mode "f6". That should get the PC running again

You may just want to disable scandisk completely. Follow the instructions in the attached hyperlink on the bottom section.

Thanx Crespos, you helped me boot into Windows, but now when I click to open the Hard Drive, explorer freezes. I am going to call IBM to see if they can help me here... Thanx

Oh, any more ideas? (Short of kicking the hard drive?)

Nevermind, my computer is on, the IBM is happily spinning, and I am happily typing because my mp3s are currently being moved.
After 2 cold boots of Windows, the IBM started spinning, and I am saved!
Thank you very much for your help Crespos!
