Question

I'm having minor problems with win2k, sometimes it will start up and NOT show my icons or background, sometimes the modem connects and doesn't. Is reloading win2k the best solution? Or is that just a temporary fix?

I had the same problem as you. I tried the repair installation and it kinda sucks.
If your anal about getting it right do the whole installation over. Lets see I think I have reloaded W2K about 5+ time now.

Before you do a full install over again you might want to try system file checker. Just go to Start > Run and type sfc. Make sure the win2k disk is in. Just let it go for awhile and it may fix the problem. It cant hurt any.

Check your h/w, make sure it's on the HCL.
W2k does NOT like to play w/AMD boxes for instance. ( You can get it to run, but it has issues )

My experience has been that when you have new/hi-po h/w win2k is a VERY solid, VERY reliable OS, that does not require you to learn arcane dos commands to operate - like linux. Linux does have it's place, but it's NOT in everybodys home.

that is most definitely a video driver problem. Look into that. Linux wouldnt have that problem cause there aint no video drivers for linux...
