How do I figure out what codec I need to play a video?

Okay, so I have a video file that always says "Error Downloading Codec" through WMP. I downloaded the latest codecs from MS's website, but the sound still isn't working.

How do I determine which codec I need to make the video have sound?

Thanks in advance.

I always just grab the kazaa lite codec pack. Do a google search on that, the lite version(whatever the smaller version is) should work fine. It has all the major codecs in it.

There is no way to tell. Trial and error.

If you have the latest Windows Media Player & you get a Codec error, if you right click on the file name in the right-hand pane (will probably be red or orange), there should be a menu that pops up and one of the choices will be 'error details' or something like that. That will usually be able to tell you what codec it's trying to download.

i end up just using the older Nimo Coded pack version 4.33. if that doesnt do it, i add the intel video codec pack. if that STILL doesnt work, i add the Klite codec pack, as mentioned (but sparingly, since adding too many codecs actually is bad - they tend to be incompatible with each other). other codecs i use (for hi def recording playback) is the one by VLC (which is also a very good media player), and the one by elecard.

actually there is a program that identifoes which codecs the video is using. It's called gspot and it can be found here: http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ .
Another good codec pack is Gordian Knot. It seems to have the most up to date stuff.

Depending on what was used to compress the file, sometimes it's in the properties window under advanced or summary.

That did the trick. I downloaded the right codec and it works perfectly. Thanks for the help!

For os x I use videolan, it is able to take on basically every video file I've gotten except for wmp9 codec files. I'm gonna go ahead with the assumption that it can do the same with the windows version. http://www.videolan.org/

a very good program, and I'll say its great if it can do the same on the windows end.

Oh yeah forgot one more thing, AVIcodec http://avicodec.duby.info/

Can usually give you detailed info on a video file, codec, frame rate, audio etc. Pretty handy utility and free!

That requires a codec to do . . . ok ok bad joke.

I believe this should do it:

In Control Panel, double-click Multimedia.
- Click the Advanced or the Devices tab.
- To remove an audio codec, double-click Audio Compression Codecs, double-click the codec you want to remove, and then click Remove.
- To remove a video codec, double-click Video Compression Codecs, double-click the codec you want to remove, and then click Remove.
