anyone know of an easy way to get rid of the about:blank trojan?

i am not very computer saavy, and i have this about:blank search page taking over my homepage. i can change my home page but after re-booting the about:blank page is back. i have looked up ways to get rid of it on the net, but it seems so complicated.

can anyone explain it to me in laywoman's terms?

*and yes i have run a virus scan, adaware, and spybot, but this cannot be eliminated with those.

you might try this

Quote:
you have to deny Thirdparties from putting popup toolbars on your homepage.

At top of screen - tools-internet options- advanced-deselect enable thirdparty browser extensions(requires restart).

Put the homepage you want in and hey presto it works fine.

if that doesn't work it's prolly a msxmlpp.dll problem. go here and follow the instructions.

Yuh, I have heard of it. It is this new thing, and the only way to fix it is to go into cmd, go to c:\windows, the type del. After you have gotton as far as you could, load linux.

But seriously, the other day i ran an ad aware scan on my computer and it said about:blank was a possible hijack attempt, so just being curious i said fix, so it set my homepage to msn, bah.

Anytime you have a spyware issue ALWAYS kill you temp files. Both in your docs and settings and in your windows directory, dont forget temp internet to0.

ya'll, this is one damn hard page to get rid of. i even had someone get on my computer to try and get rid of it, and they spent a couple of hours there and couldn't do it.

be glad you haven't been hijacked by it. it isn't malicious, but just a nusiance.

Have you tried CWShredder? You may have to run it in safe mode.

seqiro - YOU ROCK!
i have been to different help boards. hells i even let a guy control my computer via VSN to see if he could fix it, and to no avail.
the Cool Web Shredder eradicated it in about 10 seconds. i have rebooted a couple of times and my homepage has stayed where i have set it and not reverted back to about:blank.

thanks so much seqiro.
and that was sooooo easy.

did you run the cwshredder again then run all the updates for windows? did you turn off system restore before doing all this?

Maybe you're getting it from a website. Just stick to G|A and you should be safe. You goto a dirty website without the proper protection and who knows what you'll get.

When I went to a game review site it must have been hacked and it instantly tried to upload a virus to me. Luckily I run McAfee Security suite and it detected it. The program may be cumbersome, and quirky sometimes, but it does keep my computer fairly safe.
