Tip: Windows Update Error 0x800c0005

I resolved a major pain in the @$$ problem last night. Windows update would fail as soon as I clicked to scan for new updates, giving me an error number 0x800c0005. I also couldn't access our exchange webpage for work. These two pages timed out immediately. I could access some other secure webpages though, like my credit card companies and yahoo mail.

I knew it wasn't a firewall issue because other computers could access these sites from my home network.

After googling the hell out of the error message (Microsoft's KB was of no help) and trying every solution in there, including:
  • repairing and even reinstalling IE
  • checking for spyware and viruses using multiple methods
  • re-registering dlls relevant to IE and security
  • playing with my computers security policy
  • trying other admin accounts on my computer
  • setting IE's security to LOW and accepting all cookies
  • Trying all of the advance security settings in internet options
  • trying another browser, like Mozilla, which couldn't navigate to any site
  • verified the hosts file was clean
  • deleted all but the history file from the windows update folder
  • deleted temp internet files, offline content, cookies, etc
  • verified through sysinternals.com's process explorer that all processes were running appropriatly with no hidden malware threads
  • toggled XP's network card firewall setting

I got fed up and tried one last lead. Even though I had it disabled, turned off, and out of RAM, I uninstalled Norton Internet Security. Lo' and behold! I'm back in business.

I don't know why I even tried that software out. I disabled it months ago because it was a pain to work with and it's been nothing but problems. I'm better off protecting myself through smart usage than relying on that POS program.

i have to say that NAV and NPF/NIS are just TOO aggressive in protecting the PC its installed in. Most of the calls i get are due to either one of them (NAV for outlook problems, and NIS/NPF for most non-connections).
each update turns on email scanning even after youve turned it off. its already protecting your system anyway for each file you try to open, and it has to be redundant with emails.

i watch my NAV install each time i do a fresh start. i disable a couple of background services, and since i dont use any email programs (only webmail), i never turn on the email scanningf eature.

firewall? i dont use any (just my router). not afraid of hackers, nor programs that want to report back to the mothership. i got nothing important. besides, ive had real big problems with software firewall in the past, and a lot of the programs i use need to be reconfigred, or vice versa for the firewall. just more headache for me.
