Help! We're all of the sudden getting spammed on our Nextel phones
My wife and I are getting pretty ticked of because we're getting spam text messages on our Nextel cell phones. It started last week and she gets charged for text messages on her phone. How do I stop it?
The ads are from mloan.biz. They have no contact information on their page. How do I found out more information on them? TIA!

That's just great. I'm trying to contact Nextel about it and their service line is currently closed. Of course it says they are open until 10 and it's only 8:55. ****ers.

Hi. I'm trying to reach your customer service department via the number on your homepage. It's just now 9:00 and it seems your offices are closed in spite of the fact that your webpage and service line says you're open until 10.
Please call me immediately. |

This is news I heard from the Clark Howard show for the past few weeks:
"Cell phone industry going ahead with directory - June 9, 2004 The cell phone industry, minus Verizon Wireless, is establishing a directory that will list your number and allow junk telemarketers to harass you! There will be about 140 million people in the directory, and it's another way for the industry to make money. There are two giant revenue streams that will result from this. The first one being the considerable amount of money the industry will make from selling your number to telemarketing companies. The second revenue stream will come from the billions of dollars made from involuntary calls, text messages, and e-mails to customer's phones. Make no mistake, you will pay for those calls. The cell phone industry is selling out its customers in exchange for money, and, according to the industry, the list will be ready by the end of the year. California is the only state actively trying to pass a law that will prevent an occurrence like this from happening. In the past, the wireless industry has claimed that only individuals who want to be listed in the directory will be. But we know this is a lie because providers have been adding "terms of service" conditions that say customers automatically accept their inclusion in the directory. It's going to take a lot of anger and outrage from the public to put this scheme to sleep. And eventually the government will have to step in. This is outrageous! " Linky |

Here is other news about Verizon that I've heard from Clark Howard...
He says that in a recent article in one of those financial magazines (can't remember which), of the 6 big cell companies, Verizon has the fewest customer turnovers, meaning there are fewer people canceling service and going to another company. Verizon is also the company with the lest customer complaints. I personally think that once people start knowing more about how these companies are working, those other 5 companies will have to make some serious changes to keep those customers they have...good news for "In network" people with Verizon. heh. |

I just hope people don't whine and bitch for the govt to step in. Have some balls and vote with your dollar. Sign up for the carrier who doesn't sell your name. Go Verizon!
(And Fas-lingand, I completely believe your post. I'm 95% happy with Verizon and people who know me here know I like to complain about anything. Verizon's always been completely fair over issues and have never been a problem.)

here's another vote for VERIZON.
my apartment is a virtual blackhole for cell phones - nothing gets thru within 1/2 mile of it. which is weird considering im not even in the boonies or the far-flung 'burbs (12 miles from philly, and the city im in itself prides of being mostly commercial, so you KNOW telecommunications is a MUST). anyway, that being said, ive tried almost all cell phones - CDMA, TDMA, and GSM. TDMA sucks royally now (used to be from AT&T), but i switched to verizon 18 months ago (which uses CDMA). for some reason it works really well with almost all areas ive been in. yes, even in my apartments bathroom. its only this year that GSM is starting to have more towers, so its getting better reception. i now have an AT&T GSM phone, and its been great (so far) in my apartment. its WAY cheaper than verizon, which can charge you an arm and a leg if youre not careful. but i kept it, and maintain my service with verizon, since i know its VERY dependable.

I wish that I had a source though. I think it's Forbes mag, but since I don't get it, I can't be sure. In any case, Clark Howard has some great info for cell phone users and consumers in general. Some of the advantages of other carriers that I thought were cool that Verizon doesn't use is the ability to change their codes for use in other countries. Some cell phone providers make you buy phones that use chips that can be changed and used in other countries (I think Sprint is one). So you can buy these cards with pre-paid minutes for each country. Great for European vacations where contact is still needed. Then again, with most people switching from the other providers more often, you can always just borrow a friend's phone that they aren't using ![]() |
