the dreaded death click!

the click of death!

the ...well, you know.

like he said, get any valuable data off that hdd. is it still under warranty? maybe get it RMA'd. even if its old, the worst they can do is say no.

Is this the same computer that wouldn't boot in your other thread?

You're almost certainly screwed. If it's a Dell & the system is still under warranty, they'll replace the drive. If your system is out of warranty, pop out your drive & see who the mfr is (probably IBM/Hitachi). Download the drive diags from their website, run them & get the error code, & they'll probably RMA it, assuming it's less than 3 yrs old.

I just ordered a tool that makes backing up a laptop hd onto another computer very easy. It also allows me to hook up internal 3.5 or 5.25 devices externally through a usb to ide cable and independent power supply. Pretty much an external usb case without the case.

Here's a link to one just like the one I got, but since it's coming from Hong Kong shipping is going to take 7 to 21 days.

yupp. and warranty's all up. i figure that the dvd-rom was being a bit flakey too. i'm just going to try to ebay it for spare parts when i move back to the States next year. i'm gonna probably go for a thinkpad T41/42 with the three-year worldwide warranty.

thanks for the help though, jeffbx. i'm sure it'll help me out in the future.
