Unhappy Data Recovery

Anybody know of a good data recovery place near So-Cal? Or one you can ship to?

It's for a laptop HD.

Data recovery is VERY expensive.
Be prepared to spend at least $500.

Did you try the freezer trick first?

Only tried it once. Never had any luck. Maybe it'll work for you. Note: this only works on drives that aren't spinning. It's obviously not going to fix a "I formatted my drive" problem. (There are other methods as well to try.)

I have a dead HD here at work - drive spins OK, but no machine will recognize that it's connected.

Checked with a few data recovery companies, and the going rate seems to be anywhere from $1200 - 4000 for a 30GB IDE drive.

I had a dead HD a few months back. I put it in the freezer in two ziplock backs and then I hooked it up into an external USB enclosure. Gave me a good amount of time to get all my mp3s off...well I got anout 90% off before it didn't work anymore.

There's a thread with a link that describes the process in G|A somwhere. Use the search button

I really wonder if it costs them that much to do this. I know that data recovery is no easy procedure. I've heard some crazy stories about the lengths that they'll go to - but the more I think about it, I think that maybe they just count on there being a highly inelastic demand for this type of service. In that case, they're better off just making it espensive as h*ll so that they can collect more money.

In some cases it is worth it but it most it is just lost. It cost us 1200 to repair a HD so they could extract the data to DVDs. I believe the cost is due to maintaining a clean room and keeping good experienced people.
