ACK! CPU temp too high!
My CPU temp keeps going up to like 70 degrees C... and i dont htink thats normal...
I'm not even gaming or anything! I also have the side door of my case open and a big fan blowing cold air into it. I need help cuz this is really bothering me =( Do you think I need a bigger cpu fan?

Hey Johnny: I'd be concerned too. Did this just started recently and what was the temperature before?
Check the thermal paste for that AMD cpu of yours. Are you using the default cooler that came with your cpu? If so, you could buy a better cooling solution. How is your case cooling-is it laid out well? I see you were looking for a new power supply (Power Supply Connectors) in Need Deals forum. ![]() |

It's been happening for the past few months... I've just been too busy w/ school to do anything about it. The temperature used to run at about 57C. Do u think it's because my harddrive is too big (320gigs) and I dont have enough memory?(ddr-sdram pc2700 512mb). This only started mostly after i put in the bigger harddrive..
I do need new thermal paste for my AMD cpu and I have a Coolermaster on my CPU. http://www.tcwo.com/detail.htm?ProductID=333304 I checked and everything in my case is very cool, except for the CPU. The temp inside my computer is 32C. I'm going to put in 2 more fans but I dont think that'll make my CPU cooler. I Opened the side of my case just recently and blow cold air in but I dont think that cools my CPU. And yea.. I think my case cooling is laid out pretty well Thanks again sbp |

It shouldnt have anything to do with your HD and ram. 512 is more than enough ram for most current systems and software. First you should check your idle cpu usage, if its maxing out while you dont have any programs running you might have some spyware that is using a serious amount of your cpu. Then, like sbp said, check your thermal paste. Thermal paste might dry out over time or if applied improperly could have air bubbles which could cause it to not transfer heat from the cpu to the heatsink.
If you have your case open and a fan blowing on it and the temp is still 70C it could be that the sensor used is faulty. The best way to find out if it is is to use a thermal probe. There should be no way that it should be that high with a fan blowing directly in the case. Also what is the ambient temperature in the room? If the surrounding air is hot then the least you can reasonably expect is about 5-10 degrees higher than the ambient temp. Although, there is no reason that the cpu temp should be 70C. BTW, what should a cpu be running at? I have a p3 866 that seems to be running pretty hot. Im getting like 40C minimum and maxing out at about 52. My comp is pretty much never at idle, more like 40-100% usage all the time. |

Do you have a prescott CPU? Prescotts are known for running at 70C with stock intel cooling. Northwood processors should sit around 40C idle and 55C loaded. My 3.4ghz northwood was running at 70C but that was caused by my lazyness (didn't clean up the thermal residual from the old CPU)
More powerful cooling options can be found, I'm running the silenX heatsink, it works like a dream. www.silenx.com Water cooling could also be an option, but more expensive. Unless your processor is defective (appearently it is not, since you're using it), get an CPU HEATSINK/FAN combo with adequate cooling power and reapply thermal compound (arctic silver 5 is the best on the market).
