My Laptop Keeps Shutting Off

It's OK until I turn it off and restart, let's say an hour later. Then it starts to load and shuts down.

It's OK if I leave it on for hours, though.

I always use AC power. The charge indicator shows full charge. Is the battery dying?

No idea about the restarts, other than it may be overheating...Can you hear the cooling fan running?

If you use your laptop on AC power all the time, you should probably remove the battery--it'll most likely extend the life of it.

may be a sign the cooling fan is going wonky, or is just gunked up.

Where is the fan located?
The computer is a 4 year old IBM. It started doing this when I decided to get a larger hard drive. I couldn't believe what I had to take apart to get to the hard drive.
I had to remove the keyboard to get to a retaining clip for the hard drive. Not realizing that there was a cellophane strip which connects the keyboard electrically to the motherboard, I accidentaly severed it when I flipped it up.

I had to use a mouse to operate the computer.

Well, after I got that working, half way through transferring data from the new hard drive (attached within a USB case powered by the laptop) the computer shut down. The USB case has provisions for a 5volt source so I am thinking that it was robbing too much power from the laptop battery,

That's when the problem started, but it's only intermittent. Here's another thing: The keyboard is not securely fastened to the laptop yet. I want to keep it this way until I locate a cheap 5 volt adapter for the USB case. It is just laying above the original spot.

Would this affect air flow to the processor, thereby shutting it down?
It seems that when the processor has to perform a large task, the problem also occurs.

processor overheat does shut computers down but i doubt 4 years old processor will ever overheat as much as the recent ones... most likely a dead battery, battery does die down in about 2 years, especially if u leave it charged all the time. Try replacing it.
