Problems with new vid card

So I just purchased an ATI Radeon All-In-Wonder 9800 and threw it in my system, but for some reason my computer locks up all the time now. It doesn't seem to do so when I am gone at work, but once I come back and start using any programs like Media Player or IE, it'll usually lock up after 10 min or so? Am I having a hardware conflict or are my display drivers screwing something up? What can I do?

Thanks.

Was your old card an NVidea? If so and you did not remove all the old drivers from it, that can cause conflicts.

My old card is a GeForce 2 GTS, so yeah, it has the NVIDIA chipset. But I never had to install drivers for it when I ran XP, so there are no leftover drivers hanging around.

Nope. Never needed to. XP had no problem recognizing the GTS and everything ran fine.

I dont think you would be screwing around in bios, but just incase besure your AGP slot is not overclocked. My friend had a new ati card and some how his agp slot was overclocked and his card to crash all the time.

Do you have the latest drivers from ati or did you load the ones from the cd?
Is windows XP fully updated with or w/o SP2?
what other types of progs are running in the background?
Can you narrow it down to one program?
Have you fully checked your start up for any nvidia progs?
Have you made sure windows has forgotton about your nvidia card?
Is you onboard (if applicable) video still disabled?
Did you touch any other componets while changing vid cards or notice anything unusuable?
Have you run memtest86 to make sure it is not your memory?
Have you switched back your old vid card and had the machine run smootly?
Did you buy your card from a brick and mortar, if so have you exchanged the card?

These are just some ideas to get the gears in your head rolling.

Most likely its video card defective. My GEFORCE FX5200 ULTRA started crashing every 10 mins with every game, so i replaced it with a 6800GT and everything is perfect now. If driver is causing the problem, you should get a Blue Screen of Death [(C) Microsoft].
