INstalling new HD question

ok-I'm not a computer savvy person so be gentle. I have a Dell P4 2.4G with a 40G HD thats about 2 years old. I just installed a new Seagate 160G HD as a slave unit. I'd like to make it my master drive so I cloned the 40G HD to it with Norton Ghost. I checked the new drive and it seems like it cloned ok but when I open up the new HD XP doesn't open. I haven't actually switched it to the master drive and boot drive yet. If I do will XP boot up and everything work exactly like the old 40G HD or do I have to reinstall XP on it? Is there something I need to do first? Any advise on this job? Sorry for the newbie question but I'm just trying to avoid making costly errors. Thanks.

Well, if the Ghost was successful, all you need to do is swap drives positions - make the 160 the primary boot device & it should start Windows right up.

To be sure, I'd recommend just pulling the 40GB temporarily, putting the 160 on the primary IDE channel & boot it that way. Then you know your 160 is good to go.

I'd pull the plug on the 40GB drive and try to boot using just the 160... if it works sucessfully, then I'd recommend wiping the 40GB drive and converting it to "storage" for future use (because sometimes I've noticed that XP can get confused when you have 2 of the same O/S in your system.

Also... I'd HIGHLY recommend that you partition your 160 (using Partition Magic at this point) to keep your O/S files inside of 40GB and use the rest of the disk for storage and ghosting. This way you don't have so much space to have to defrag (which makes that process go faster) and you don't have to worry as much about losing your important DATA versus your programs (which can be re-installed).

Partitions and Ghost are your friends...

Thanks for the replies guys. I got it going using the disc wizard to clone the old HD then making the new one the master. Now I just have to fine tune it a bit. Thanks again.
