Question Pictures disappear in WORD 2003

Just bought a Dell XPS system with the Radeon x800xt 256 video card. If I open a WORD document (using Office 2003) some pictures may appear briefly, then disappear with scrolling. They are generally visible in print preview, and the graphics print ok. If I click on where the graphics should be, I generally get a graphics box, but generally no image. I made sure view drawings was checked in WORD tools and picture placeholder unchecked. Doing a google search, it appears other people are having the problem with XP SP2 operating system. I found 2 suggestions- one was to turn Direct X off (don't know how to do that though...and it doesn't seem to be a great solution) and the other was to update video drivers- but since this is a brand new system, I assume it has the latest drivers. Or- is something wrong with the computer and should I return the unit? Is there some incompatibility issue with the video card and the operating system?

Update the video drivers. Dell uses their own 'certified' drivers, so even if they're the latest Dell drivers, they're typically a release or 2 behind the MFR. Get the most up to date drivers from here

The graphics disappear in any Word 2K3 .doc I have with graphics in it while that document is being scrolled. A half-second or so after I stop, they reappear. I see it as normal behavior, unless once they disappear they never come back.

generally, the graphics do not come back- I have some documents with multiple small images- and one or two may reappear on the page, but not the rest, and there doesn't seem to be rhyme or reason to it...also, initially on opening the document (before scrolling) the graphics generally are not appearing- the spacing for them is, and if you click on it you can see an object box, but generally no image

If you open the same doc on another machine, do the graphics appear normally? Are they linked or embedded?

they were perfect on my old machine- I was running XP Pro, but SP1, not 2, and it wasn't the new video card

Have you tried changing the "view" option? I have found that "View->Page Layout" shows the graphics consitantly, where as the same document with "View->Normal" is missing the graphics just like you described.
