Win 2000 startup keeps opening Registry Editor
I've been goofing around with my new toy, and old Toshiba Satellite 4000CDT laptop. I installed a couple of diagnostic tools such as Diskkeeper, RegSupreme Pro, CCleaner, Spybot, and some antivirus and firewall software.
Whenever I log onto the machine, it insists on opening the Registry Editor...sometimes even 2 copies. I know what you are thinking, I've already unintsalled RegSupreme Pro...thinking that this might have been the cause...but I have also loaded that software on every machine I have and none of them have the same issue. I've checked the startup folder too...not there. I have also checked the actual registry to see if maybe there are some strange programs starting up...so far it's only a couple of the above listed programs. Any ideas? |

weird... never seen anything like this happen before that wasnt just inadvertantly added to the startup scripts somewhere. Try a google on it, maybe someone else has had a similar problem.
I'll see what I can find this evening after work. ~Kyle

I've searched google...unfortunately, the combo of "registry" and "editor" just pulls up registry cleaning, tweaking, and those sorts. I've combed through the pages...but found nothing.
I've searched "win 2000 registry editor opens on startup" and other variances...still nothing. Any help would be greatly appriciated. |

Can you click on "Disable All" in msconfig Startup and see if it still opens when you restart?

There's a number of free programs that help you monitor and control what gets run at startup. I've used Startup Inspector (nice because it can consult an online database of items and tell you what many of them are) and Startup Control Panel (concise list of each possible startup group). I find them much easier to work with than msconfig (which always seems to complain if things aren't in a full normal startup configuration).

Spybot does something similar in Advanced Mode. Go to Tools - System Startup... Also, have a look at this: http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.php Quote:
Not to tug on Superman's cape or anything, but there is no msconfig.exe in Win2K as it comes from Redmond. You can, however, add the WinXP version to Win2K manually: http://www2.whidbey.com/djdenham/Msconfig.htm
