How does a Graphics Card Fry?

Apparently my NVIDIA card fried. After trying to boot my computer this morning, it beeped, and then beeped 3 more times. Monitor did not get any response.

After some lookup, found that it could be my graphics card. When I started the computer again, I noticed that the fan of my Graphics card was not working (didn't spin).

Took out the board, put in an old Voodoo (remember them!) pci board, and it booted.

My question is... anyway I can fix such a thing? ANd does this happen often?

Well, if the GPU (under the fan) is fried, it's not fixable. How old is the card? Have any type of service warranty on it? A fan failure would certainly qualify as a defect & you should be able to get a replacement if it's still under warranty.

Does it happen often? Sure, quite often if the fan fails! Graphics cards put out a ton of heat, and if they're not cooled properly you'll get weird output and eventually the card will die when the GPU overheats too much.

Also to add to Jeff's comments... If you're still under some kind of warranty or service plan, you may want to _NOT_ mention anything about any overclocking, unlocking, etc. that you may have done in the past, as this tends to void pretty much all warranty's, and is an easy way for companies to get outta warranties on gpu's.

However, from my personal experience, 'frying' of graphics cards tends to happen when playing games etc for long periods of time, did your computer reboot itself last time it was up, or did you have problems the last time it 'worked'.. if not, it may have not fried in the gpu overheating sense, as it's generally difficult to overheat a component when it's not on. It may have just died... which sadly happens as well, and cannot be fixed.

Look for some warranty stuff, if it's an old card, it may be just the excuse you've been looking for to upgrade

good luck

I have had increasing issues with the PC, one was due to the ram, but this one would attribute to why it was so sensitive and would crash from time to time.

Fan huh. Ok guess its time for a new one (Card)

I had a water cooling PC and one day, the water leaked and dripped on to the video card, I was watching TV and the screen was getting fuzzy and fuzzy. I turned off the computer and found that the video card was really fried... It was black in color. Luckily other parts of the computer were just fine.. I am still using that PC(minus the video card) and its working Great!
