6800GT Woes..
So yesterday I bought/received my very own 6800GT.. finally..
And it's great.. it's everything it's talked up to be, and more. background: I upgraded from a 6600GT, at which point everything worked fine, and I had none of the problems (other than framerate occasionally) that I'll describe momentarily. And now for the problematic part: So I plugged in the 6800GT, (had to move my HD ) and everything booted up correctly, although I have noticed that I no longer get the screen where it counts the graphics card's ram, but that's likely unrelated...At any rate, the problem is: Occassionally I will get to a point in a game, or while benchmarking... -during a scene- that the game/screen will just freeze or lock up on a frame, and a few seconds later it will pick back up with whichever frame it would be at normally, as if nothing had happend ( i.e. not the next frame after the one that froze.. the next frame that it would display @ the time it picks back up). I think the best way to explain it would be it's acting similar to what happens when you need to grab textures/graphics/etc from hard disk while playing, that sorta 'slowdown' --hope that makes sense. I know it's not the game's freezing because they continue to run.. I think.. ( I say this because the benchmark picks back up, displaying something like 3FPS instead of ~400, so it was still running, however, not getting any frames rendered ) I have a feeling that updating drivers and whatnot may be the obvious solution, but I just wanted to know if anyone else experienced this and/or found a solution. Anybody have any ideas, or heard of similar problems with the 6800GT? Oh yeah, the usual: AMD64 3200+ 939 @ 2.4Ghz 1GB pc3200 DDR eVGA 6800GT 256MB GDDR3 AGP w/ NV5 heatsink (temps are fine w/ cpu/gpu) Thanks in advance, ~Kyle

Did you completely remove the video card driver before installing the new one even though it could use the same driver?

No, I didnt.. I guess I hadnt thought of that... I'm _slowly_ downloading the newest nvidia driver right now, so hopefully that'll install smoothly.
On second note.. something's messed up, my stupid buddy list keeps opening up from the taskbar to the middle of my screen instead of the far right like I want it to.. even after I drag it over there, weird. Okay, I have a few quirks to work out heh. anyone? ~Kyle |

I agree with Bach. Make sure you uninstall the old drivers and any other card apps before installing the new card. Install from VGA res.

Welcome to the finest video card still available for AGP... (well technically, that might be a 6800 Ultra, but hey... lets not go there.
)Now, a few questions... 1) Did you make sure that the auxiliary power plug was plugged in? 2) Is the fan properly cooling the card? 3) Is anything "hot" sitting next to the card? Now if those things are done... here are my suggestions (some of which may have been previously said by other folks) 1) Go get the latest Nvidia drivers for the GeForce 2) Try to make your case as cool as possible. This card gets HOT!!! You have to keep it very cool 3) If all of that still fails, contact eVGA and see if you might have gotten a defective card. It happens. ![]()
