usb thumb drive

is there a way to reprogram one that has loss its memory ?
i have a unit that loss its storage memory . it reads as a usb drive when inserted in a the computer but will not take any data

and this is a 4 gig unit

so is they anyway you know of to reprogram the chip !

If it is under waranty, the best thing to do would be to return it.

You can try reformatting it.

reprogram != reformat

Reprograming it would be reflashing the firmware controling the drive. Not something you can do without specialized knowedge and equipment.

To reformat it you need to:
Plug the USB drive in to a USB 2.0 port.
Open the Control Panel.
Double click the Administrative Tools
Double click Computer Management
Double click Storage in the right hand pane.
Double click Disk Management in the right hand pane.
Select the USB drive
Right click the USB drive
Select Format from the dropdown menu

thank you this was what i needed to know if its possible to do . i try it if not i be giving it away for testing to a friend -i thouht i bought a sony micro vault 3 months ago -what i got was this a fake copy of a sony unit

and it lost its programing and crashed on me last night !

well tryed that again and no luck -it reads the drive as being there but wont let me format it or and files reads it as a 0 mb usb drive

Did you buy the drive on ebay?? There are a lot of couterfiet drives floating around... What type of drive is it anyway??

thanks delta it i found out is one of them ! i got it 3 months ago off a different forum . guy had 4 he was selling and i was one of the happy buyers .
i spoke to sony yesterday and found out it is a fake . they told me there being made in india . and the bottom line here is unless i can find a way to reformate it -im out $100 - and i thinking that is what it will be .a or should i say . i just got a screwed for a $100 with out even using any ky jelly . this hurts !!!!!

How did you pay for it??? Did you use a credit card thru paypal by any chance?? I would do a chargeback or report that guy in the forums and ask for the money back. He sold you a counterfiet one, Tell him that you will report him to sony. Its not like its defective, its just counterfeit.

I bought a Sandisk Cruzer Mini 4gb of ebay from a seller with 58 positive feedback. I asked him where he bought it and he told me retail. I paid it using an Amex card and so if its counterfiet, I will do a chargeback and report that guy to ebay...

sony told me -they were not interested in the unit -and it was a mo i sent him - and there is not a lot of things after 3 months or even 1 month you can really do . i have posted on the forum to be on the look out for fake drives .but im screwed on this one im sure !

You can file a claim via USPS mail fraud

I got a Brand new Cruzer mini 4gb Flash drive for $115 and its a real one NOT fake.. I called sandisk and they confirmed the warranty using the serial number. They also registered the product. That guy who sold it to me is a powerseller and has a feedback of 350. I also paid using Amex.
I transfered files and it works fine..
