The only thing I've found about an "unrecognized database format" has to do with problems with database files & MS Access.
http://www.datarevive.com/unrecogniz...ase-format.php
That page has two solutions with the Access issue, one of which says it could be a corrupt or damaged database file...maybe the Swaysoft install messed up, or the downloaded file was corrupted?

1) Can you open the file (that you downloaded) on your friend's computer?
2) Have you tried opening a (proven) working file from his computer, on your computer?

Do they both have the most recent version of DirectX? (9.0c I believe)
I wonder if that's it...?
Both computers are running the same OS, correct?

I had to convert to the language the program was made in First (chinese) in XP, restart, and then go back to English XP

just that, the xp system would recognize the damn crap

Glad you got it fixed.
FYI - checking DirectX -
command prompt -> type "dxdiag" (without the quotes obviously)

it shows the DirectX version one on of the last lines in the window
later
