W2K box won't recognize internal CD ROM...

It is recognized in the BIOS, I can even boot from it, but Windows 2000 won't see it nor assign it a drive letter. I am certain it is a Windows 2000 problem because it persists even after swapping the HD into another mechanically identical unit.

I have replaced cdrom.sys from the 2000 CD. chkdsk has been run. I guess a repair install is next unless any of you have any suggestions.

All Windows Updates, SP4, etc are currrent, and the machine is virus and spyware-free.

Go into the hardware manager and make sure there isn't an optical device loaded with an error, the ones with the yellow exclamation marks. If there is one, delete it and reboot.
If not, try add remove hardware. Try to automaticaly detect and then, if that fails, manualy select the drive.

Done, done and done. I've tried the CD ROM manufacturer's drivers and generic drivers.

It shows up in the Device Manager with an exclamation point, and under Driver Details is says no driver loaded for this device.

Ok, it doesn't want to cooperate...

What is the manufacturer and model mumber of the optical drive?
Have you checked the manufacture's web site? They might have some information that will help you.

At this point I usualy apply a manual kinetic adjustment, but many people remain unconvinced with this methodology. What I have done in the past is remove the hardware manager entry, shut down the machine, remove the drive, check the master/slave/CS jumper, change the jumper to master or slave as appropriate (I avoid CS). Reinstall the drive, power up and pray.

It is a BTC drive, don't recall the model number. I went to the site and didn't see anything (other than driver files) that held much promise. I have tried Master, Slave, and CS combinations plus both IDE channels between reboots. I've piddled with this thing for about two hours off and on. I'll take another crack next Saturday.

I am tending towards robbing a different brand drive out of another box (or buying one) and trying it for grins.

Did I ever tell you that a BTC 24x CD drive tried to kill me once?

It wouldn't open, I kept hitting the eject button but it didn't stop. Then I dropped my pen, I reached down to get it and then the cd drive popped open, with the cd still spinning at full speed. It shot out of the drive at full speed, right through were my head was seconds earlier. It bounced off a few cabnets and finaly came to rest. I have been warry of BTC dirves since then.

How many other drive letters are assigned? I know that WinXP has a problem assigning a drive letter to removable media if the letter after the CD rom drive is mapped.
For instance, if D is the CDROM and I map E to a network share, the removable media will be seen in Device Manager, but will not receive a drive letter until I remove the network mapping.

Maybe that's what you're seeing here, only with a CDRom instead of a flashdrive.

Thanks, I'll check it out. C: is currently HD, D: is a USB zip drive, and the network drive is mapped as P: Can't remember if I disconnected the Zip or not.

Fixed!

I think I saw a reference to this KB here somewhere. This box didn't have an IDE burner nor Roxio installed as stated in the KB, but I deleted the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters reg keys as described, rebooted, and it worked.
