notebook hard drive

i have a 6gb that works with it and when i put in a 40gb it freezes at autodetecting ide devices, any suggestions?

Could be limitations of the hardware. An older BIOS would get confused at anything over 32GB, a really old BIOS would freak after 8GB.

any way to bypass this, change bios(without resoldering the chip, maby a hacked bios), someway of faking it out, anything i didn't think of...???

There should be a jumper on your drive to set it to 32gb. If that isn't there, I have no idea.

Look at the laptop manufacture's site for any manuals or FAQs they might have about your model. There might be information there that can help you.

newest bios from hp and its a n3250, look on the hitachi site and it didn't have a 32gb jumper setting.

Is this a brand new drive? Try formatting it via USB external case if you got it.

no i got it from a friend but i have tried it in two other older notebooks and it worked perfectly, and i don't think that matters if the bios doesn't like it.

Better yet, partition it into two 20GB drives (or 10GB and 30GB) and see what happens.

Unless someone has a trick up their sleeve, you are absolutely correct. Windows may identify the partition, but the BIOS could care less.
