Reformat without requiring key???
Hello all,
Long story short, I reformatted a laptop for a friend. He did not have his copy of XP from dell, so I used mine. When going through the process, it did not ask me for the activation key. -Loaded with XP CD -Deleted and created new partition -Proceeded with install -NEVER asked for the key Could I have done something wrong? Thanks! Last edited by turtleb16a : 02-06-2006 at 04:14 PM. |

If he had a different licence for XP than you you did. For example if you have a licence for Pro and his is for Home, you are wrong.
If you have the same type of licence, then not really. |

If your CD was "branded" from the same manufacturer as your friend's laptop, it would explain a lot. For example, Dell puts the activation code (and other info) in a hidden partition on the factory hard drives. When you install with their OS CD, it reads the info from the hidden partition and bypasses the need to enter a key.
