McAfee problems: Jerks won't respond

I sent this email on Friday and still haven't heard back. Anyone have a clue on how to fix this?

Quote:
Hello,
I have a new case that I would like to report. First off, this is a friends
machine. He asked me to look at the problem because I'm a PC/network technician.
This computer fails to load McAfee Security Center, saying:

"Some McAfee SecurityCenter components might not have been installed or
launched properly. Restart your computer to fix this. If this message appears
again after restart, please reinstall McAfee SecurityCenter."

This error occurs on all profiles. Profiles all have admin access.

After verifying the computer was spyware/adware/virus free (using several
different online scans, personal tools, and personal experience), I tried to
Reinstall McAfee using the CD that came with the computer. (It's a Dell XPS 400
with Windows XP Media Center).
Reinstall fails, saying that a previous version is already installed.

I attempted to remove security center through add/remove programs, and it threw
the same component error, refereced that a .mu file was missing and closed. Now
McAfee doesn't appear to be listed in add/remove programs anywhere.

In addition, Internet Explorer locks up whenever I try to navigate away from the
initial page. I have determined the problem to be something in C:\program
files\McAfee\ and c:\program files\mcafee.com\, as if I kill running McAfee
processes and rename these directories, IE works fine. (Also, mozilla firefox
runs without trouble. It was installed after this error started occurring.)

Looking at Windows Services, all McAfee services are started except for
McAfee.com McShield. If I attempt to start this services, I get an error code
5022.

This computer was purchased in December, and McAfee was working when the machine
arrived, to my recollection. Something's corrupted it and I can't seem to figure
out what.

I've run the IEregfix.bat tool from your site and it made no change to the
problem.

I've disabled windows security center.

I would like to try a manual uninstall, but I can't locate any directions on
your website on how to do so.

The virtual technician does not provide accurate results, either. Your site
requires me to run IE to use virtual technician. Well, IE locks up unless I
rename the McAfee folder mentioned above. So right off the bat, the virtual
technician notes that the problem is missing files and folders. I told it to fix
the problems, but it did not resolve the error message mentioned at the top of
this email.

Thank you for reading such a length email. Please help.

Sounds like a good reason to switch to Norton AntiVirus to me.

I'm talking with technical support right now through a chat window. His "Name" is Rafael Houston, but his email address is seema_jhamb...ODD..

BTW....damn anyone for REQUIRING I have to use IE to properly use their site. Double damn them if they corrupt my IE so I can't get to their site to fix their problem.

Edit: I thanked him at the end of the session and referred to him as Seema. He corrected me that Seema is his supervisor.

I have resorted in situations like this to "ripping the app out by the roots", meaning manual deletion of files and registry entries. Time consuming, not fun, but pretty effective.

Mechmike0034 stole my response. Damn psychic's.

But yes, shut down the services (all of them), remove the files then remove it from registry. After that, it should re-install fine.

Yup...didn't want to have to do that until I was 100% it wasn't going to screw things up worse. AV programs tend to imbed themselves into EVERYTHING and mass deleting is not always the best solution.
I ended up coercing that tech to give me manual instructions (which was simpler than I expected.)
After that, I had zero issues.

I've read good things about ZA security suite. Unfortunately, since a point a while back, the ZA firewall bogs down my internet speed by about 2/3, so I can't use it. I has paid ZA Pro, but their tech support just threw up their arms.

Great...I gave the computer back and now when they try to connect to Earthlink, the modem is using up both of their phone lines. Same cable, same jack, same modem. Not sure what changed. Any ideas on THAT one?

Every so often (like when one of my boys sets up a new computer) I try installing the latest free ZoneAlarm firewall. Last time I checked (probably a month ago or so) I still dragged down the download speed from 6mbps to under 2mbps. Uninstall ZoneAlarm, install Sygate Personal (I still have a copy of the free version), speeds are fine.

I figured it out. They had the phone cable in the wrong port on the modem and apparently, that caused some CRAZY stuff. (Set off the house alarm, tied up both lines, dialed and connected on one of the lines...)
