Windows 98SE Won't Boot

I recently upgraded from 98 to 98SE..I know..Funny

My USB printer wouldn't work, and I figured that in the BIOS that I had to enable USB after the upgrade,

I didn't realize that was the problem...right before I enabled USB, I ran a CDROM for my motherboard thinking that the USB drivers weren't present. I may have done something weird when I clicked on a possible Windows 95 driver.

After the 98 icon with the clouds show, I am getting an error: Configuration Manager can not load because the following files are not present: (These are all VXD files)

VWIN32, VXD, VM, SHELL, VTD, VPICD, VXDLDR

I tried different boot sequences to load the Windows 98SE Upgrade CDROM, nothing..I have three CDROMS..maybe I have the wrong IDE or CDROM selected. I also tried the boot floppy for Windows 98SE. It goes so far and then stops at A Prompt.

What to do next?

Oh, this upgrade was several months ago..Everything was OK up until today. I hadn't tried the printer until today.

oh man, I can't even begin to tell you when I forgot all my troubleshooting knowhow for 98. Sorry man.

Keep in mind that although they claimed 98 supported USB, it never really did. Is your hardware USB 2.0 or 1.0? That could make a difference.

I've loaded XP on old PCs... still less problematic then 98SE (as long as you have enough RAM in there.)

Win 98SE was the beginning of USB support (along with Plug and Play)... however in my opinion, they didn't really get it right until XP came out.

I wont boot due to missing drivers, an upgrade may not work (you ay have to do a format and fresh install. any chance you can identify the computer so you can find updated system drivers. vxd are system drivers(a fresh install may fix the vxd errors). From the :A prompt type "dir" that will show you the programs on the floppy. i think "setup.exe" will start windows.

Fixed!! I was able to access the CDROM with the 98SE OS. It took less than an hour but it now works and so does the printer. Thanks
