Please Help: Opening IE or MSN Messenger reboots system!!!

Ran Norton, came up with nothing. Can't access AOL account. Able to get online using Mozilla...Any ideas??? Anyone experience this before? Thanks in advance!

This is on my in-laws computer. They have a knack for hosing systems, as you can see...

Check the antivirus software to see if it's corrupted. McAffee corrupted IE on my g/f's parent's machine and it was a b*tch to fix. (McAffee's site requires you run IE to access their online fixing tool.)

Make sure you run windows updates as well.

gwilks98: Thanks. How do I check if my antivirus is corrupt? Also, I can't run windows update since it opens up IE, which in turn restarts the system...

Thanks.

Thanks.

There is an extension for Firefox (and therefore more than likely one for Mozilla also) that lets you use Windows Update with Firefox instead of IE...do a little digging around on the Mozilla site and I'm sure you'll find it.

Sounds like your Explorer is f'd up...IE uses Explorer, AOL uses IE, etc. I think you may have to do a clean installation of XP (or whatever Windows OS you're using).

Well, the machine I worked with was throwing errors when I tried to launch AV. That was the first clue.

Try uninstalling it if you think that's what's wrong. MY IE issues disappeared once I uninstalled. (Then I was able to reinstall.)

Note that I did this as a last resort. You certainly don't want to remove it if you're not 100% sure the issue isn't a virus.

If you want a second scanner, go to www.trendmicro.com and download sysclean.com (just do a search for it) along with the latest pattern file. Then boot to safe mode and run a scan.

zero2dash: Pointed the update to run with Mozilla. Did the update, problem still persisted...So, I just reformatted/reinstalled XP. Cleanest route I suppose...Thanks for input though.

Thanks also gwilks98.
