Word Selects Instead of Typing

Running Office 2003 Pro and WinXP SP2 on a new Dell Latitude. Intermittently, when typing in Word, can't type in the document anymore. All typing and mouse action results in text selection. Closing Word then re-opening doesn't clear it. Have to shut down the laptop and restart to clear. Although the problem always initiates in Word, once it starts it extends to all Office 2003 applications, including Outlook. It's not a Scroll Lock or stuck key problem.

It has happened when the Latitude is docked with an external keyboard and when it is running undocked. It happens in freshly created documents sometimes as well as older documents created from pre-2003 templates. Small documents and large documents. There's no rhyme or reason to it as far as I can tell.

I've tried TechNet and Office Online but haven't found anything about this problem.

Any suggestions? (GAM, if this should have been in software, please move it.)

I had a similar problem a few years ago, but I thought they'd fixed it...

On your language and input settings, is the microphone on? I mean, is the dictation setting on? I remember that that used to screw me up all the time before I figured it out and turned it off. I thought my computer had been possessed because I'd be typing away, and the mic picked up the clicking as a series of "a" or "k" sounds. It freaked me out further when I screamed in frustration and my paper was erased and replaced with "Aaaaa."

Numlock is on when docked, but not when it is undocked. The problem occurs in both states. No microphone attached.

It's strange that it only happens intermittently, with no discernible pattern.

Sounds like a bad mouse. I was able to reproduce the same problem by holding the left mouse button down while trying to type in word. I'd swap it out to see if your problem disappears.
