Very strange...

I'm pretty watchful over my computer. I get prompted to install new hardware when I booted up tonight. Realizing there's nothing new on this machine, I cancelled and investigated and saw this in the device manager:

I have no idea what it is. Google wasn't too helpful. I updated the windows validation tool last night (and didn't restart). After that, I used diskkeeper to defrag.

That's all that changed. Anyone have any ideas what this could be? I've seen cases of antivirus programs adding components as hardware, but I'm at a loss with this one.

My guess is that you have a component that's failing or has a bad connection to the computer. Are you missing anything from the list?

I'd start with the NIC, seeing as how it's kicking out an error there in your Device Manager (red X).

Something has failed / is failing. Only a matter of time before you figure out what it is...

good points. thanks.

I'll check out the nic. I didn't even notice it when I took that screenshot. (Proof I'm running tired these days.)

Doesn't the red x mean it's disabled? Which would be the case if he's using the wirless card that's listed under it.

Don't remember. I have 3 NICs: wireless, onboard and a pci. I'll have to check to see if I disabled more than just the onboard.

If you right click on the mystery device and select "Properties", it might yield some useful information.

Nope...there was nothing in there that I could decode. However, I reinstalled some new updates from M$ and rebooted. The mystery device is gone. Maybe it was flakey hardware.
