Wife has pneumonia. Contagious?

My wife has pneumonia. I've looked online but I can't tell how contagious it is. I got a headache and a sore throat so I don't know if I should go to work or work from home lest I infect my co-workers.

Besides the meds she's taking anything on the home front I can do? Starve a cold, feed a fever? Load up on chicken noodle soup? I know it's pretty deadly in older folks but probably not so in this case but I guess it's still serious.

Google turned up this answer for me:

IS PNEUMONIA CONTAGIOUS?
Yes it is, but it is LESS contagious than most people think. The cold virus that started the cough in the first place is contagious. But the pneumonia part of the illness down in the lungs is far less contagious. People who are exposed to someone with pneumonia may catch the normal cough and cold symptoms of the virus, but usually don't progress to pneumonia. The formation of the pneumonia is not determined by the particular cold virus or bacteria that the person has, but rather by each person's susceptibility in their own lungs.

Therefore, just because someone in your house or school has pneumonia and is on antibiotics, does NOT mean everyone else in the vicinity with a cough has pneumonia. Wait and see how the illness progresses before asking your doctor for antibiotics.

Dunno if I'd wait. Pneumonia can work pretty damn fast in some people. As far as contaigion, it really depends on the bug. So does treatment, and there are some nasty bugs out there.

If it's Viral Pneumonia yes, it could be contagious..if it's bacterial pneumonia-then no it's not. Tell her to drink tons of water and rest..if she's on medication she'll start feeling better soon.

Yes pneumonia is contagious whether it's bacterial or viral and if you do have a pneumonia, I would probably assume that you got it from your wife (assuming that your symptoms are anything like hers). It is important though whether your wife has viral or bacterial because it would change the treatment... along with your symptoms. As for what you can do at home, stay well hydrated. Water, gatorade, soup, juices, etc... I usually do recommend some vitamin C although admittedly there isn't really any great data that it helps but heck, couldn't hurt and some of my patients swear by it.

Including the obligatory disclaimer.

I wish a speedy recovery!
